That's more reasonable. Murphy's should've been a 3 year, 14 million contract.

The value of one WAR in the free-agent market is ~$7.5 million, IIRC
So, for example, a player that's consistently a decent bet for 2 WAR would be worth ~$15 million per year. Of course, due to aging, this would probably be a bit lower, but the point stands.
Also, small sample size is a thing

His WAR is 0.3. Essentially, his contract price should be precisely $2.25M. He's lucky, if he's getting paid more than three times the amount.

The Pirates have excellent scouts; they know value when other teams do not. Look how they plundered the Yankees, who thought they could do without Martin and then Cervelli. Of COURSE those guys did better with the Pirates than with the Yankees; they had better position coached by far.

I'm still mad at the Cardinals for letting Freese go. Some of the deals they've made have been tough, but made sense. Trading away Allen Craig and Shelby Miller, for instance. Trading Freese, on the other hand, was stupid.

The announcers are really excited over the fact that Fenway Park now meets minimum standards.
Price still looks like a good pitcher, I miss him on the Blue Jays.

There's the Pirates and Tigers too, but Verlander hasn't pitched well and it's not close.
