I've been reading a most curious book on this matter. It addressed, among other things, the rather absurd situation that was Muslims born in Germany lacking German citizenship for being the descendants of, for example, Turkish immigrants, even if they spoke German perfectly, while people from the farthest corners of Europe who happened to have German ancestry could easily get citizenship, even if they couldn't speak a word of German.
