No. "Famous" is a subjective word.

Famous in China or India, where there are roughly 1.2 billion people in each, is quite different to being famous in the 'the west' of the USA, Canada, UK, etc.

I'd imagine Michael Jordan and Donald Trump wouldn't be in a truly worldwide list, but someone like David Beckham probably would be.

Those are there ones there that I'd consider well known practically everywhere. Tiger Woods and Bill Gates probably less so than the rest. Putin seems rather notable, I'd say. Tony Blair, possibly? Also, Roger Federer?

The list would include a lot of world leaders, of course.

EDIT: I forgot Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan and Ban-Ki Moon. As I said, world leaders.

I'm taking this to mean "most well-known", by the way.

Well, here in Korea, everybody knows Brad Pitt. Michael Jackson is definitely on that list. Obama for sure. Maybe David Beckham? Or Michael Shumacher.

A little known fact is that I'm actually a very famous person, but I'll just let you all guess.

Quite.

Most of the Indian Cricket Team would trump that list, as would Shane Warne.

I was going to put other people on the list and leave some of the people that are on there off, but I'm too lazy to really put much thought into it.

i would have thought the Pope might have been in with a shot. Though it is quite possible most of the top ten could be Chinese celebrities we have never heard of and still be more famous than some of the names suggested so far - I mean who the hell is Scott Brown?

Some obscure US Senator, elected in Massachusetts recently. The Pope would definitely be up there, of course.

Most of the people are posting US centred lists.

Ah thank you. I was wondering whether they actually mean Dan Brown who has far more of a chance of being there than the likes of Scott Brown and Snookie.

I don't even know who this Snookie is. Dan Brown is quite possibly one of the most famous Authors in the English speaking world, I think, but wouldn't be in the top ten famous people world wide, in my opinion. The only real definite contenders on the list would be Barack Obama and the Pope, really.

Snookie?
Wes Craven?

And although relatively intelligent people world-wide have heard of Hugo Chavez, if I just asked random people in the street, I doubt many would know who he is.

The Pope and Barak Obama are probably safe bets. Some other world leaders are quite recognisable in many places; Kim Jong-Il and Vladimir Putin spring to mind. Previous US presidents would also be worthy of consideration.
Bill Gates is probably the only business guy who is universally known whilst someone form a global sport like football would have a good chance of being famous anywhere outside North America.
Stephen Hawking is probably a good candidate but maybe too western. Nelson Mandela would certainly be considered by most people over 25.
Perhaps the Dalai Lama would be up there?
