German minister sparks controversy over comments.

Postby Democratic Socialist States of Africa » Wed Sep 02, 2015 4:30 am

A German state minister sparked a social media storm Tuesday after calling a beloved German pop singer a "wonderful Negro" during a TV debate on Europe's migrant crisis.

The Twitter hashtag #Neger (Negro) topped trending topics in Germany the morning after Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann used the term for Roberto Blanco, who is of Afro-Cuban origin.

"Roberto Blanco was always a wonderful Negro, who most Germans thought was wonderful," Herrmann had said in a TV talk show Monday evening on public broadcaster ZDF.

Continuing on the topic of immigrant "success stories" in Germany, he added that football powerhouse Bayern Munich also has many star players "with black skin".

The debate centred on Blanco -- a household name whose career as a singer peaked in the late 1960s and early 70s -- comes as Europe faces its biggest migrant influx since World War II, with Germany the top destination.

On social media, people poured outrage and scorn on the comment from the minister of the conservative southern state of Bavaria.

Twitter user @Herzistvoll wrote: "A 'Negro' is only wonderful when he amuses white people with singing, dancing and football".

User @TheGoodOldGamer commented that Herrmann "also has nothing against #Negroes who do the housework and work in the fields".

Another Twitter user wrote that "whether Joachim Herrmann also finds #Obama wonderful remains unclear".

An online comment from Berlin daily Tagesspiegel sneered that "little Joachim would like to be picked up from the 1950s".

Herrmann on Monday morning was back on the airwaves to justify his comment, saying he had replied to a caller who had first used the term by saying he "did not want to have Negroes at all".

The minister said this comment was "completely unacceptable", adding that "I usually don't use the word Negro at all".

The German minister sparked controversy over comments when he called a German pop singer, a wonderful "Negro". Now, he may have intended to compliment him but the way he stated it was not the correct manner since the word negro is a very controversial word. In addition to that, the German Minister could have simply stated she was a good sister instead of adding race into the statement. So what do you think? Should the German Minister have made such comments?

eh, i think he is an old man and grew up in a different time. terminology and what is politically correct varies over the years. in the end he meant to compliment and it wasnt taken as such an insult according to this quote: "I can't imagine that he spoke with hostile intent," Blanco told news portal Focus Online.

Not saying it's :) good to use that term, but some people honestly just think that's the appropriate term. Some people get offended at the term black, people still use it all the time.

Eh. It's by no means appropriate, especially for a politician, but it doesn't seem malicious. Just ill-informed and backwards.

Eh. Not seeing anything terribly wrong. He misspoke, and apologized. Especially if the above is true, then this isn't really anything to worry about.

Knew this would hit NS sooner or later.

BTW all I saw on Twitter were uninformed Americans raging on something irrelevant to their own country they didn't know jack shit about. Comparatively few Germans acting outraged.

Of course I don't know much about him.

In German the word for black translates to black in terms of color but can also mean negro if used to describe a person. I dont know exactly what this man said but saying "Der/Die ist ein/eine wunderbares schwarzer!" would translate to either "He/She is a wonderful negro!" or "He/She is a wonderful black!" or "He/She is a wonderful african" since in german from what I know, saying someone is an "African" while not insulting in english is possible to be interpeted as negative depending on tone and what was said before. Like how in Canada and America we say sup nigga to eachother for fun with no harmful intent but if someone swears and goes F you nigga! its meant to be deragatory.
