I can confirm that DFW, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and El Paso would probably try to GTFO of any independent Texas.

Texas has nuclear weapons in its territory. Would Texan soldiers in the federal army defect?

They dont have access to the nuclear weapons. Or rather, they dont have the ability to launch them. A select few have the launch codes. Pretty sure you need more than one code to start launching nukes.

And so this newly independent Texas, without most of its' population, retreats into the Permian Basin to hide out for the last days of its' existence. Then it gives up in three hours and rejoins the Union! Panic over.

There may be a very straightforward answer to this, but I'm left to wonder how it is that the nuclear arms in Texas are assumed to wind up in the newly-formed government's hands in the first place. Wouldn't it be just as plausible that they'd be relocated prior to the secession's completion or seized during the transition? Why is it a given that they keep those?
