She wasn't thrown in jail because of her religion. She was thrown in jail because she refused to do her job as an elected official and tried to deny rights granted to people, violating the 14th amendment.

She's in jail because she broke a court order that basically read "DO YOUR JOB". She didn't do her job, so she was placed in jail, exactly as the court order said. If you don't like that, you can get the hell out of MY country. It has laws.

Yes, but it was based off of religious preferences. Not choice.

She can't be fired she is elected. She refuses to resign, and refuses to obey the law of the land. The first amendment which prevents the integration of church and state is partially why she is in the wrong. While she represents the government her right to practice her religion is limited. Oh and stop trying to flame.

Nope it was entirely based on her refusing to obey a legal court order.

I was born here and I think this sorry excuse for a clerk ought to rot in jail until she figures out that doing her job is not religious oppression. If anything her refusal to marry these gay couples is an example of her forcing her religion on others.

I suppose the one benefit of people barging into NSG threads and being loudly, aggressively ignorant and incorrect is that there's at least some entertainment value can be drawn from it.

Ms. Davis' job is to, as far as I am aware and technicalities aside, authorise marriages. (I defer to others on the precise definition.) She is in a secular civil service. It is not her job to determine what the definition of marriage is or enforce a definition of marriage not in line with the law.

If she had any decency she'd either a) sign the licences or b) resign.

Would you be fine with a Muslim using a state office to enforce sharia law instead of the laws of the United States, or does your concern for "freedom of religion", as with so many of Ms. Davis' defenders, extend solely to allowing Christians to illegally discriminate?
