Yes but we don't mean it in that sense. When we say it, it means our ancestors are from these places and are ethnically X Y or Z. You can't really be 'ethnically' American, except for the Indians (which is ironic that I'm making the statement, given that I'm half Native American, being Cherokee and Seminole lol).

but that's the problem isn't it? it's a bad habit and is incorrect because it implies nationality that is not yours.

Technically, the Latin American countries used to be unified into the Federation of American States or something like that. It ended in the latter 19th century though.

I disagree. It implies ethnicity that IS yours. For example, though I'm Native American, I'm also English and Jewish. I'm proud of my heritage, though do not claim any loyalty to anything but America, except in a 'I happen to like England because I lived there.' type thing.

I'm pretty sure if an American goes to Germany, Italy or another place and goes " Hey I'm german or italian" the locals would look at them like they are fucking nuts.

Same for that colombian guy when you say you are american. It's not more easy and correct say that you are from the United States? America is a continent, not a country. Same when you say "I'm north american"... You mean you are from mexico, USA and Canada at the same time?

In Spain, we call you "Estadounidenses", that means, yeah, United statesiens. Saying you are "american", sounds strange, like if a Saudi sais he is from Arabia... wait, wich country from Arabia?... You get it?

I can understand, actually, why that's annoying. All of them are from the Americas, and given the United States's history of..."protecting" the Americas, it's understandable that saying I'm American would annoy some people. And it's not really that difficult to phrase conversation to use "the United States" instead of "America" when talking about the country and "I'm from the United States" rather than "I'm American." I do it habitually, even when talking to people who wouldn't be offended by it.

"American" is actually the only demonym that (at least in English) typically doesn't apply to an entire continent when it can (and should)

Think about it tho. People tend to not distinguish between Senegalese, Angolans, and Somalians - what matters is that they're black, and thus "African".
Chinese, Vietnamese, Japanese, and Korean people are all "Asians". Indians, Persians, and maybe even Siberians are Asian too, but people usually don't consider them due to stereotyping. I'm Asian myself but from none of those ethnic groups.
Not sure why they do distinguish Europeans. Prominence of each country? Race? And I don't need to discuss Australians.

But when people say "American", they usually don't talk about Mexicans, Brazilians, Canadians, or Dominicans. Especially not Cubans.
