North Korea Megathread

South Korea has ordered the evacuation of residents from an area of its western border after an exchange of fire with North Korea, reports say.
North Korea fired a shell at a South Korean military unit on Thursday, prompting the south to retaliate with several artillery rounds, the South's defence ministry said.

South Korea's National Security Council is due to hold an emergency session.

The western sea border has long been a flashpoint between the two Koreas.

North Korea fired a projectile towards Yeoncheon, a town north-west of Seoul, at 15:52 local time (06:52 GMT), the defence ministry said.
Reports suggest the target could have been a loudspeaker broadcasting anti-Pyongyang messages.

The South then fired "dozens of rounds of 155mm shells" towards where they thought the rocket was launched from, the ministry added in a statement.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage on either side.

Well fuck. There has been more than the usual amount of tension along the border than usual this year but this is certainly one of the bigger escalations since...well, the last time they shelled South Korea.

Should we be scared? I mean, I assume that this doesn't mean all out war but this certainly doesn't really sound like progress is being made, especially with the South's current "hardline" President (for the want of a better word).

What do we think NSG?

Mod Edit: Rolled up the two new threads into this one. Always a good idea to check beyond Page 1, folks.

It must be muscle-flexing season again. I doubt much if anything will come of it as the political risks of open conflict are too big for the leaders on both sides.

God, did the harvest fail again? Let's just drop a few tonnes of state-of-the-art farming equipment on that nation so we can get rid of their wining for a few years.

Honestly, the Korea's have traded artillery fire for a few years now, and it has never escalated. Neither part would dare be the aggressor in the conflict, because that would mean either China or the US gets into the conflict. So, don't worry. North Korea will continue to purge and exterminate her own population for years to come without bothering the global community with it.

Summertime, you see. The Koreas are basically strutting down the beach in their speedos, handing out tickets to the gun show.

Every series has to have a beach episode. It's in the rules.

Just another week for the Korea's as usual most likely because of the whole restart of Propaganda broadcasting from Seoul. I see nothing really serious going on just some artillery fire trading across the border with apparently North Korea not trading return fire once the South Koreans started firing... Again another day for the Korea's and another day of showing off each others power.

At least it's not as bad as Kashmir and such....

One day South Korea isn't going to take this shit anymore. I look forward to that day as the Norths huge, out-dated military is wiped away by a smaller force. It'll sure be something.

If that were to happen then i want to visit Seoul one last time before Northern artillery starts raining down...

Yeah, except that there are thousands of North's huge, out-dated artillery pointing at Seoul right now just waiting for the word.

It's not going to happen, the US won't allow it. The last thing we need is another damned Korean War. If things get too hot there will be phone calls between Washington and Seoul and Beijing and Pyongyang. People will make speeches and then, oh, look over there, a bunny!

And where is the "Canadian Chicago"?

I can not say how good Korean defences against artillery are but given the amount of artillery guns pointed at Seoul and the pentagons claim that it could take up to three days to deal with this threat I can say that at least a few would hit down in this unlikely scenario.

It won't happen though... North Korea ain't stupid it won't march at South Korea knowing damn well the situation it would bring to them.

Also Canadian Chicago is a local nickname for Hamilton, Ontario which is now your daily fact from Grandpa Zatak!

The two are always on the verge of reigniting that war from 65 years ago. They have only signed a cease-fire and technically the war between the two Koreas hasn't ended.

Yeah, and the Souths superior aerial ability could take care of that before too much damage is done.

No, North Korea is pretty stupid. Smart people know how to run countries, and North Korea does not.

They ain't stupid enough to try and launch some sort of invasion of South Korea. The North Korean leadership understands what will happen and what will be done. This is nothing more then both sides muscle flexing.

It could be worse.. It could be like Kashmir.

Any all out war would be the end of North Korea, because you just know America is going to get involved, and I'm not sure if China is going have the North's back this time around. As said before, it's muscle flexing season.

North Korea has a military with the numbers that South Korea considers the Zerg Rush as an invasion of North Koreans across their border.

It wouldn't destroy Seoul only really damage it.. Let me quote Anthony Cordesmon.

"Artillery is not that lethal," says Anthony Cordesman, who holds the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and is a national security analyst for ABC News. "It takes a long time for it to produce the densities of fire to go beyond terrorism and harassment." Even in a worst-case scenario, where both U.S. and South Korean forces are somehow paralyzed or otherwise engaged, and North Korea fires its 170mm artillery batteries and 240mm rocket launchers with total impunity, the grim reality wouldn't live up to the hype. Buildings would be perforated, fires would inevitably rage and an unknown number of people would die. Seoul would be under siegeā€”but it wouldn't be flattened, destroyed or leveled."

No doubt that it would be a Morale victory for the North who could parade this around to whoever they want too.
