Q: What is this Thread for ?

A: It is here for the purposes of discussing the history and issues surrounding the Second World War. My motivation was simply this there was no NS WW2 thread so I resolved the issue to create an arena for such discussions to take place. Hold in mind that all forum rules and regulations are to be followed here at all times. In addition to following the normal forum rules and regulations, members are expected to post on matters with a reasonable level of objectivity. Stating ones opinion is fine, but statements should always be backed up with facts. Enough information should be given for other members to be able to check the source. If you wish to post pictures, that's fine too but, keep in mind not everyone is on broadband so keep the pictures to a reasonable size.


Q: If this place is for discussing WWII history, can we talk about the Nazis ?

A: Yes and no. If used in the proper context, a discussion about the Nazis is acceptable. Let me reiterate, this is not a place to come and flame users, countries or political groups whose beliefs may differ from yours. While the military history of Germany has produced fine examples of warriors and commanders as well as impressive technology, Nazism is not cool and anyone who identifies themselves as a Nazi by embracing the Holocaust , or even racism, will get reported to the moderation. The same context holds true for all theaters of war including, but not limited to, the European and Pacific theaters.

Q: I want to learn more about the Second World War. Where else can I go?

A: Public libraries and bookstores are good spots to start. Keep in mind though that, just as on other subjects, internet sites are subject to the ideologies of the people who created them. They may not always have accurate information but, we shall strive to only post links that appear to be accurate and as unbiased as possible. Also, keep in mind that history is generally written by the victors. It is not uncommon to find conflicting reports about the same incidents or circumstances due to this. This is an allowable discussion point but, should not lead to flame wars and the like. If it does I will ask the mods to lock the thread.

Since we haven't been given an opening discussion topic, I'll begin with how I became interested in the most transformative war in human history.

When I was a kid I was a big fan of geography. I'll loved maps like no one else's business. So, naturally, my love of geography led to a love for history. And, for me, the historical period that I most loved to study and read about was World War II. My initial introduction to the war was through atlases that detailed the progress of the war in both the European and Pacific theaters.

While I was a kid, and before I became super interested in Star Wars (which, coincidentally, was massively influenced by the weapons and factions of the time), World War II was where I acquired my first real clues on what the wider world was like. To this day, I've kept most of my World War II-related memorabilia from when I was a kid and expanded upon it.

As of today my World War II-related stash includes atlases, fictional novels, a poster of a Supermarine Spitfire, numerous documentaries that are both old and new, a growing interest in World War I, a number of reference books, movies and miniseries, my introduction to the alternative history genre, and an obsession with politics.

Also, of the two major theaters of war, I've always been biased towards the Pacific theater.

The soviets would have been pushed back to the Urals, and war would still be going on around there, and I could imagine the UK would be a nuisance to rule over, what with all the plans for insurrection and resistance, but it would be a relatively peaceful life in occupied Europe, provided you fit the bill physically and mentally.

If you've killed the enemy, peace has been achieved.

No people, no war.

In that particular sense, it is correct.

It's not, however, the right thing to do. The goal does not justify the means.

Really? Please, elaborate on why occupied Europe would suddenly be peaceful, when mass murder was the means to that end.

Oh, it wouldn't be sudden I'm sure. The effects of WW2 are still felt today, and they would be in this alternate history as well. The nazi eugenics system would be in full steam, and homosexuals and mentally/physically disabled people would be pretty much extinct by now, along with the European Jews who would be removed from Europe. Everyone who wasn't one of those, especially Germans, would be experiencing a time of growth and relative prosperity due to the systems that would be put in place.

I don't advocate the holocaust or any genocide by any means, but I do know they were a problem in Germany, I just wish a more humane method was used to get them out of Europe.
