Recently there was a thread entitled You Suddenly become President of The United States what do you do? While many great ideas where proposed the President of the United States can only suggest laws they cannot actually make them. For this scenario let's say you are already a US congressmember (as its highly unlikely though not impossible that someone not in the house could become speaker) and whichever party in the US you align with has a majority in Congress
Here's what i would do
Outlaw Gerrymandering and mandate every state use an independent commission like in California to draw legislative lines
Take money out of politics and ban people like the Koch Brothers from participating, institute minimum turnout laws for elections(if a certain percentage of voters don't turn out the election is invalid)
raise taxes on the rich back to where they were in the 1980s
overturn all voter id laws passed by Republicans
restore the voting rights act
remove tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas and instead give tax hikes
invest in green energy
give Washington DC a full voting representative in Congress
make Puerto Rico, Guam, Virgin Islands, Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa states
invest in affordable housing
Legalize Marijuana
Cut government waste in the budget
Cut government spending on things like particle research especially CERN
Cut Military spending and stop building planes and ships the Air force and Navy has said they don;t need.
Get rid of urban sprawl and invest in cities and encourage movement from suburbs to cities
Stop borrowing money and spend within our means.
Get rid of military equipment being sold to police
Raise the minimum wage to a living wage
Stop the insane rent prices in major cities
Invest in infrastructure and high speed rail.
Stricter penalties on polluters of air and water and make them pay for the clean up.
