I'm sure this topic has already been done, but it seems like holocaust denial is almost criminal in the world. I don't understand it. Sure, its stupid and ignorant (although I think the most vocal holocaust deniers like Ahmadinejad simply to do it to piss people off), but should it be criminal (like in Germany)?

personally my thought is no, but I understand the rationale of countries like Germany that don't want to allow it.

In places where it had no reach (i.e. no one from there got killed because of being Jewish, gay, disabled, etc.), there's no excuse for it to be outlawed.
In places it directly touched (i.e. someone from there got killed because of being Jewish, gay, disabled, etc.), I get it. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I understand why they'd want to do it.

I have never believed it should be illegal (something my mother and I fight over constantly), if only so that we can see what they are saying and refute it absolutely. The second you outlaw something, the more believable it becomes to those who are already disenfranchised or ignorant of the facts.

Someone once suggested that anyone denying it be sent to the death camps they claim didn't exist, not to be executed, but to look upon what they claim never happened.

As I have argued before, I would not oppose banning claims about historic events if you do not bring anything to the debate that has not already been refuted several million times.

If you wish to deny the Holocaust - fine. But bring some new information to the table instead of rehashing the same old nonsense that was shown to be bullshit decades ago. The holocaust hurt people, and lying about it does not alleviate the hurt. Nor does it make you a very nice and truthful person.

EDIT: that "you" was aimed at deniers in general. Not at the OP or anyone specific.
