That is the thing about NYC, half the people don't even speak English, although the tourists usually do...

You'll be fine with just English, even in the various Lower East side neighborhoods (Chinatown, etc).
You should probably brush up on some of your Yiddish, however. A lot of it has worked its way into common speech in the New York City area (schlep, schmear, schmaltz, schmooze, and schmuck are the big ones)
