Its really dark there, as in very few sunny days. Don't get too depressed and kill yourself.

I've lived in NY for most my life, and visited NYC for about a month or two. NYC is nice, expect a lot of Mexicans and Asians if you go to Brooklyn. Driving isn't as bad as people say it is, although its more hectic than anywhere else I've been, I viewed it like a fun game. Theres tons of interesting things to do, good "ethnic" restaurants.

New York has really high taxes, expect to pay out the ass for gas. Um, it can get a bit cold there, obviously... IIRC, liquor and wine can't be sold in grocery stores, so if you want liquor you have to make an extra stop.

Driving in NYC is laid back and relaxed by Russian standards.

I'm sure. But people in NYC aren't suicidal, just in a rush and probably sick of living in overcrowded conditions. And as others have said, its not very clean, watch out for rats in the subway ;)

Honestly, it can take a long time to get form one end of NYC to the other by the subway. A car will get you there faster, in my experience. Plus groceries are a bit easier to get if you have a car.

It's a pretty common thing in the Northeast...in CT, only beer can be sold in grocery stores. In MA, no alcohol can be sold in grocery stores with the exception of large chains (large chains can have 5 stores that stock wine). In New Hampshire and Vermont, state liquor stores can stock liquor, but wine and beer can be sold pretty much anywhere.

Actually, in one of the towns I frequent in Vermont, there is a 7-11 that is combined with a state liquor store. When I go there, I have to pay for gin at one register (the state liquor register) and pay for the limes and tonic at a separate one (the 7-11 register).

Welcome to the world of blue laws.

I've yet to experience LA. Maybe soon. But yeah, even in the "nice" areas of Manhattan (financial district, upper east side, etc), the streets are still filled with trash, and there is that constant sulfuric, acrid, musty stench coming from who-knows-where.

That depends on how you grocery shop, in my opinion. If you hit the little produce stands daily for those needs, and just hit the bigger markets for basics, then it is easier to just get one of the collapsible carts or lug the bags a few blocks.

LA proper has no nice areas. Kind of like what you are describing but worse. LA has nice suburbs though. NYC suburbs are better however (besides the weather factor).

That's always the strangest thing when I leave southern New England...CT, RI, and MA all restrict alcohol sales to just liquor stores and occasionally beer/wine in grocery stores. Suddenly, I hit Long Island or New Hampshire, and go in a 7-11, and there's pounders in every aisle.

Never been I hope you go somewhere nice though.

wait is this the city or the state you are talking about?

And honestly I am tired of Texas(don't tell the Texans until I am safely out of the state) so if I end up at a regional law firm I would rather have a place like New York.

Bah. Move to the Ol' North State. Our universities are better. And overall a much nicer place to live than NY.

Ol' North State? :eyebrow:

North Carolina?

I don't think so. Maybe he means Mass?
NC definitely doesn't have better schools than we do...

EDIT: oh, then what schools do you have that are better than say, Cornell?

Public schools I'll grant you but our Universities are exceptional.

I'd like to see the comparison, really. I only know a bit about what the Uni's are like for fields that are related to mine, and I can say that NC State is ranked about equally to the SUNY schools, which don't really come close to Cornell in many things (although my concrete canoe team whipped theirs :) ).

NC is nice, but its also a bit too warm for my tastes.
