Depending on your interpretation of many of the major religions, most of us are going to hell, anyway.

We're damned if we don't summon a demon, so why not go and do it?

Nah, still wayyyy too risky. Apart from anything else there's a fair chance of collateral damage and people getting hurt/killed just because said Demon wanted to prove a point to me. I'd rather not have that on my conscience, hell or no hell.

Well, I suppose it falls onto what exactly you want to get the demon to do.

Makes sense.
Not like you deleted the post, or anything. Though NS told me that the above post did not exist, so I couldn't reply to it.
:p

Anyway, as I probably mentioned earlier on the thread, the best way to make use of the ability to summon one or more demons, would be to conjure succubi for "research purposes".

The number should be 616, that was the numeric equivalent of the name of Nero, "the Beast".

Here's one of my favorite scenes:

Glendower:
I can call spirits from the vasty deep.

Hotspur:
Why, so can I, or so can any man;
But will they come when you do call for them?

Glendower:
Why, I can teach you, cousin, to command
The devil

Hotspur:
And I can teach thee, coz, to shame the devil—
By telling the truth. Tell truth and shame the devil.

Henry The Fourth, Part I Act 3, scene 1, 52–58
"Life is difficult".

Summoning a demon sounds like fun.

Being an avowed sinner and opponent of organized religion, I don't hold much hope for my soul to escape eternal damnation anyway, so I might as well strike a pact with that demon for earthly gain. Say, becoming the most powerful man on Earth...

Before entering the pact though, I'd ask that demon if he'd take a certain number of other people's souls in my stead. Knowing how demons usually are, he'd probably ask for the souls of people important to me or something like that, so that would be a real tough one to decide.
Freedom doesn't mean being able to do as one please, but rather not to do as one doesn't please.

A fool sees religion as the truth. A smart man sees religion as a lie. A ruler sees religion as a useful tool.

The more God in one's mouth, the less in one's heart.

I'm not sure. It depends on just what demons are like, what they have to offer, and if I think that summoning a demon will reliably lead to whatever good purpose I have in mind.

Considering what Christian folklore has to say about demons, I'd have to say that I'd not do any summoning, though I would probably keep the book.

If daimones can be good, why not summon up a eudaimon (a good spirit)? But that would be equivalent to summoning up an "angel".

Infected Mushroom wrote:You have a very very clear dream in which you pick up an ancient-looking purple book, turn to page 666, read the words on that page in a clear voice, and then drop the book into a large bonfire.

You are aware in the dream that this will summon a Demon.

Before you see what happens next, you wake up.

The next morning, you are having coffee when the mail man drops a package by the door. You open up the package and to your shock, you find the ancient purple book (it looks exactly as it does in your dream).

You decide to do some research. You go to your local library and read up everything you can find on the shelves and on the web on demons, incantations, demonic pacts, even some literature on the subject etc.

You draw your own conclusion based on this research.

You go home and you find the book waiting.

What do you do with the book?

Do you destroy it? Do you use it to summon a demon (and if so... why? Do you do it out of intellectual curiosity? Out of the hope that you can make a pact that can benefit you? Or for some other purpose?).

What do you do?

I think ultimately I would have to try it out and summon the demon. Otherwise, my curiosity will never let me sleep.

Having seen many episodes of the show A Haunting probably not. But then again i might do it out of curiosity but i wouldn't be hoping to make a pact or anything as demons are evil as i understand it.
