I don't care if people care about my cultural heritage or not. Hell, I put 'white' down for race when asked in the US because I'm pretty much completely assimilated (and I don't believe in affirmative action so I avoid the benefit I'd get for even validly claiming the blood quantum necessary to mark native American). That doesn't change the fact that I'm still ethnically native American.

Also keep in mind, Native Americans don't get offended by these things...it's white people! Will you PLEASE stop minding my business?! I don't need you to tell me what offends me! I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself!

Hey, that's a really good point. Egoman, close your ears. My wife loves steampunk and every time we go to an event she's got something even more Victorian to wear. Japanese cuisine spread to the US with the immigration of Japanese immigrants to California. Sushi was one of the things that caught on in pop culture. It was as organic a currywurst.

If kimono caught on as formal attire as well, that would be organic cultural immersion as well.

This display is none of those things. This is just a show to attract people to an exhibit, not a serious display on kimonos, their history and meaning.

I must state that the purple heart comparison was born out of the article link divietan about native American head dresses. They, like purple hearts, are earned and wearing one when you haven't earned it is insulting to their culture.

There's maybe kind of a point about the headdress, but absolutely none about the kimono.

Though I would feel completely comfortable with a museum managing an exhibit where someone would wear one for a few minutes while being educated about what one would mean for the person wearing it in the past and what they did to earn it. I would feel the same way about a museum asking a patron to pin on a purple heart for a few minutes and imagining some of the scenarios they would have had to live through in order to earn it.

In short, if you aren't allowed to explore other cultures at a fucking museum, where can you do this?

Exhibition of cultural dress is a large, and generally first, step towards more serious study of that culture.

It works the same way from Japan to America as it did America to Japan a century and a half ago.
