Yes.
It is also racist to never get butthurt about non-western cultures adopting western clothing, because of the assumption that western clothing should be treated as the normal default.

Except both are being treated as side shows to entertain people and not actually reach people what the fuck they are, their meaning, their history, or, fuck, ANYTHING ABOUT THEM besides them being related to the painting they are in front of.

I don't care if people care about my cultural heritage or not. Hell, I put 'white' down for race when asked in the US because I'm pretty much completely assimilated (and I don't believe in affirmative action so I avoid the benefit I'd get for even validly claiming the blood quantum necessary to mark native American). That doesn't change the fact that I'm still ethnically native American.

Also keep in mind, Native Americans don't get offended by these things...it's white people! Will you PLEASE stop minding my business?! I don't need you to tell me what offends me! I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself!

Okay, no, I have to take the other side long enough to ask a question. There are many seminole/cherokee that disagree with you. Do you ever talk to them? How do those conversations go?

Hey, that's a really good point. Egoman, close your ears. My wife loves steampunk and every time we go to an event she's got something even more Victorian to wear. If I don't do anything in a year or two it'll be corsets, bustles, and wireframe dresses. I wonder, what is the moral way to respond to this cultural appropriation happening before my eyes? I mean, I can see how other people in this thread can feel justified in ignoring Japan's cultural appropriation of the west, seeing as doing something about it requires effort, but now it's confronting me and I have no way to hide from it.

Goddammit! I'm gonna gauge my eyes out and rip my ears off at this rate.

This display is none of those things. This is just a show to attract people to an exhibit, not a serious display on kimonos, their history and meaning.

There's maybe kind of a point about the headdress, but absolutely none about the kimono.

Though I would feel completely comfortable with a museum managing an exhibit where someone would wear one for a few minutes while being educated about what one would mean for the person wearing it in the past and what they did to earn it. I would feel the same way about a museum asking a patron to pin on a purple heart for a few minutes and imagining some of the scenarios they would have had to live through in order to earn it.

In short, if you aren't allowed to explore other cultures at a fucking museum, where can you do this?

Exhibition of cultural dress is a large, and generally first, step towards more serious study of that culture.

It works the same way from Japan to America as it did America to Japan a century and a half ago.
