So, clearly, many people have many different beliefs on what occurs once we have died. The first and most common one is generally religious; this theory proposes that there is either one or several "Afterlife(s)" where our being, usually referred to as a "soul" becomes basically immortal and forever inhabits this Afterlife. Abrahamic faiths believe that there is a heaven for people that were generally good and pious during their life, a hell for "sinners', or, in some sects, a Purgatory where the "neutral" people suffer the torments of hell for a certain amount of time before going to heaven.
A second theory that is usually religious but sometimes secular claims that the soul of a human transfers to a newborn child at death. Some people who believe in this theory, known as reincarnation, claim that people could be reborn as either humans or animals, whilst others claim animals are not connected to the reincarnation process of humans.
A final theory is that there is nothing after death; just... nothingness. Our cells wear away and transfer to other beings, but we are forever gone, never to return in any way, shape, or form.

Personally, I do not believe in an afterlife or reincarnation; I simply believe when we die, that's it. We're never coming back, not on Earth or any sort of afterlife. I do not, however, completely disregard reincarnation; sometimes, I consider it's reliability.
