Let's discuss a better example:

Your neighbors moves out, and leave their house with a for-sale sign out front. They were a nice younger couple who didn't always get along, but the duplex accommodated their whims. Over time you don't see anyone else move in, and one day your neighbor across the street asks if his kids can play in the dilapidated house's yard, since you're the person most effected by the decision. You graciously accede.

Over time you begin thinking about expanding your garden there, and actually knock down your wall to get the process underway. The city informs you this is not how one acquires property, and you grudgingly agree, putting up a makeshift fence again. At no time do you consider buying the house.

Then, one day, the young lady who was the previous owner moves back in. You are surprised, because you had kind of thought of the house as yours at that point. She has taken up with a new man, and in a few years small children run about merrily in the house. This makes you grumpy with the sound of their feet trampling what would have been your garden.

So one day you knock your own fence down and drive the children off, wielding a formidable hatchet. The landowner chases you off with a shotgun, and then you begin referring to his backyard as "My East Garden" and take him to court to get it from him.

What is the rational response to this court case?

Fact: Jointly settled by the Spanish and English who both claimed all of the islands, briefly avoiding war.

Fact: Both powers later withdrew, neither relinquishing its claim.

Fact: Later, Argentina talks about fishing rights, sets up vaguely illegal colony-thing on islands.

Fact: Colony removed by US, Brits come back to the land they never relinquished their claim to.

One the one hand, you can argue that the Spanish claim defaulted to Argentina- except by that logic, South America's borders need some major reworking.

On the other hand, Brits have just as much of a claim (if not more due to discovery).

So, on the field of legitimacy, Argentina has less than Britain. There's also self-determination and whatnot, but I'm sure you've already heard that.

Argentina invaded the Falklands in the last year of an unpopular regime as a way to try and show the people that they was as STRONK as their words were.
This failed.
And rightfully, the people ousted the failing government.
The Falklands were inhabited by the Brits since 1766. Argentina wasn't even a nation until 1816, when they immediately sought after claiming lands that were claimed by the British and the Spanish Empires. Spain didn't do anything about it, but Britain left a plaque letting everyone know that a big portion (the Stanley area) of the Falklands were indeed claimed by the British Empire. Spain should have rightfully owned the West Falklands, but the British just seized it.

And of course, Argentina being as stubborn as it is, decides that digging up a 217-year old grudge would be a great way to rally the populace.
Both Argentinians and Brits get so unnecessarily butthurt over this topic, when the facts are there.

And for those who want it to be independent, I urge you to think. Yes, the Holy See is an actual country. But, it's a joke. It has an exception (for one reason or a stupid 'nother) mainly because of it's status as the home of Roman Catholicism. Really, it's a stupid idea - like making the Schloßkirche in Wittenburg its own country. Wittenburg was also a city-state, like the Vatican, but this is the 21st Century. Wake up and smell the progress xD

Both sides of this party are biased, but especially the Argentina sympathisers. The Falklands, afterall, are British at the moment, and so British sympathisers are merely patriotic. Argentina sympathisers are just angry and annoyed because they lost a war in the middle of a military government. Get. Over. It. If you want land so badly, make like Galtieri and try and annex some internationally-recognised territory, like the Atacama. You have just as much justification (none) to invade the Atacama (or some other nation's territory) as your corrupt dictators did to invade the Falklands.

The Argentinian soldiers were scared shitless and didn't know how goddamn fast they had to surrender to the Gurkhas when those proud troops landed on the islands.
