Why would Britain need to rig a vote in which British citizens voted against leaving their status as a British Protectorate?

In Crimea, non-Russians were claimed to have voted to join Russia, days after being invaded by forces that initially were denied as being Russian then having been Russian.
The pre-existing claim of Britain to the Falklands has been backed by military force in 1833 when Argentine mutineers were terrorising local shipping routes, and they were deported to Buenos Aeries. It has been subsequently backed by military force in 1982 when Argentine forces invaded and subjugated the local population.
