Considering the entire concept was created as a mockery of my community's struggles, its different from the example you gave, where religion has been hijacked.
I doubt people even had any idea that the transgender community existed back when they began worshipping Native American religions in America (many of which are based on such a belief) or when stories about werewolves started appearing in Europe. What I understand from your post is basically 'oh no Illuminati' to me.
For thousands of years, people have thought 'oh, I have something in common with [object/animal]' and/or 'I wonder what it would be like to be [object/animal]' intentionally to sabotage you in the future. No other reason.
Considering that there wasn't a transgender community as vibrant as we do now and Tumblr wasn't a thing, it's a pretty stupid comparison to make it a mockery. The ideal has been around for centuries, and even now, native Americans pratice "Two spirit" where they are both male and female in terms of identity and religion.
I'm also going to put out that, even as a "otherkin", that I usually don't act like a deer. I identify as a deer, but I'm not going to act like a deer. I'm not going to be asked to be called a deer, it pretty much my own little secret that means somewhat little in my life of charades and games.
