We have all the context we need when botherkin directly compare their bullshit to our struggles. Which only drags us down.

Agreed to an extent. I don't hold any animosity towards otherkin, yet I feel like they shouldn't try to latch themselves onto the trans movement. It's really just a spiritual thing and although... I suppose you could call it an "identity" it really is a separate issues from trans issues and overrall just needs to be kept in a separate movement.

Most just identify on a spiritual or symbolic level with other species or mythical beings, so it's generally harmless and nice if it helps people feel more secure in themselves. I definitely understand on some level considering I'm a furry and have puppy and little sides. I hold no illusions that I'm a different species or a different age, though I feel connected to weasels on a personal level and will act like a puppy or little girl either as a defense mechanism in stressful situations or when I'm overwhelmingly happy. My fursona is just an idealized version of myself, being far more confident, assertive, and playful. I'm really happy that those are aspects of my personality, and can't think of any instances where it has actually harmed me. Otherkin, furries, pets, littles, ferals, and the like just have different ways of identifying than normal, and I can't really see any problems of it in and of itself. If someone actually genuinely believed they were biologically a different species and ended up hurting themselves as a result, that would be an issue, but I've honestly only heard of a handful of such instances in my life, and they reflect underlying mental issues, rather than just a subculture.

If something doesn't actually negatively impact you or those around you it is ridiculous to describe it as a mental illness. It's a different way of thinking; that's it.

I think it's a socio-psychological phenomenon

Undoubtedly, some people will claim to be 'otherkin' for its own sake but then there will be a substantial minority who, through genuine belief or deluding themselves long enough that the lie becomes the truth, will have a genuine delusion that they're 'otherkin'.

For many, it'll be tied to issues of dissatisfaction and escapist fantasies from their mundane lives. Unfortunately, our brains can be so good at imaging that it can convince itself the imagined is real and the real is imagined.

These widespread cultural delusions are common, though: from the 15th century to the 17th century, some people sincerely thought they were made of glass (most notably Charles VI of France, or Charles "the Mad"). Then there's the "hysteria" of the 19th century. All completely imagined, all completely physically harmless but significant enough to be worthy of public note.

I can understand transsexuals and their fight to be the gender they feel inside, but seriously, other Kin? :?

"Mom, dad, I need to tell you something..."

"Is it that you are gay, Timmy?"We love you and will support you,"

"No mom... I'm... I'm... IM A BULL!"

But seriously, who would want to give up being a human? It's like winning the lottery and handing back the ticket.

IIRC, hysteria was just pent-up sexual frustration, because women weren't really encouraged to have orgasms back then. Not really "completely imagined" so much as easily treated and easily prevented.

For them, it's like winning Shirley Jackson's Lottery. As long as they're not trying to claim actual legal rights (which is ridiculous) then who cares? It's spiritual and you don't see a Furry Rights Movement going on. Just leave them alone before they think starting one becomes necessary.

Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

I'd just be an 'edgy Kinster' and say that I'm not human, I just identify as a human.

The problem with SOME people with this hobby is that they think it's more than just a hobby, due to attention seeking behavior patterns. At that point, yes, it is pathological. But, I wouldn't even call a Furry pathological if, at any point in time, they could take off the mascot outfit and say, 'yeah, it's just a hobby', and go about their day. We wouldn't say a Trekkie 'identifies' as a Klingon, even if they had a full-bore Klingon wedding. We'd say they might be overobsessed hobbyists, but nothing necessarily psychologically damaged.

The big problem with this otherkin business is that it runs into legal issues if someone says they want to marry their cat because they 'identify' as a puma. It's a slippery slope, because a lot of lay people don't understand the psychology behind LGBT behaviors and think that it's just a slippery slope before we really are a society that doubles as an Aristocrats joke.

I don't see the legal issue with marriages. A marriage between a puma and a cat would not get any more legal recognition than a marriage between a human and a cat.

The problem arises when it comes to criminal law since animals can't be charged with crimes, and it is legal to do things to animals that would be crimes if you did the same thing to a person.

Gentleposters, let me be clear: if the point of all this trolling, malicious nicknaming, et cetera is to make this thread become irretrievably shat-upon to the point of locking, it will not work. What WILL happen is that we will move from warnings for rulebreakers, to bannings, as appropriate.

Knock it off. If you can't be civil about it, go play elsewhere.
