I have finally found the strength to admit it.

I was 12 years old when I realized that I’m not really a man at heart, but rather a 19 foot, 10.5 inch long gatling gun strapped onto a 24,959 pound airframe.

Guys, we literally JUST had one of my colleagues finish a thread trawl and smacking. Let's NOT go into that asinine attack helicopter meme that people like to use to troll transfolk. I will go poke the hell out of Nerv to get him back in here if I have to.

On the actual topic, being surrounded IRL by psychology graduate students/doctors who know this stuff, I'd say that the Otherkin/furry/therian/whatever notion is not, in of itself, a disordered behavior, until and unless it is actually interfering with the person's ability to function. It's pure escapist fantasy, sometimes thrown in with a spiritual twist, and like other such things like video gaming, LARPing, and plain old fandom behaviors, for most people it's perfectly harmless fun; while for some, it gets taken way too far, and to the point in impairs their ability to function.

I can definitely see it appealing to people who have certain other disorders, particularly along the lines of depression or self-esteem or self-image issues. Perhaps even to an extent other things such as gender identity or sexuality. I could easily see it being used as a sort of way to self-treat such issues or at least to try and escape them to some extent; alternatively as a means of processing some of these issues by fictionalizing it to give it a safer distance. I mean, look at the creatures people stereptypically identify with, and the sorts of traits those creatures are commonly associated with:
Elves- the stereotypical elf is associated with desirable traits such as beauty, elegance, wisdom, and being in-tune with nature.
Dragons/Gryphons/fictional predatory beasties- Power, sometimes a sort of wild or primal beauty, strength, a sense of majesty. The badass that you don't want to screw with.
Wolves/big cats/real world predators- Again, a sort of wild or primal beauty, strength, sometimes cunning. Certainly the freedom from the stresses of the human world.

So in that sense, it's understandable why you don't see, for instance, a whole lot of stuff like turkey-kin or something. Prey animals and the like tend to have undesirable associated traits that make them not fun for the reasonable majority who are into it purely for harmless fun/spiritual purposes, and not appealing to the minority using it to cope with other issues.

Admittedly, the overwhelming majority of my encounters with people claiming to be Otherkin/furries/therians/etc have been incredibly negative, but I have no way to be sure if they were trolls simply playing it up, a sampling of a noisy messed-up minority, or what. I just remind myself that for every highly-visible, loud, obnoxious, creepy stereotypical one, that there are probably at least half a dozen perfectly reasonable ones; like any group, it's always the noisy assholes that tend to stick in peoples' memory, not the well-mannered ones.

As someone who was born a metal killing machine, I can tell you, you will never truly be one of us. You can never have the experience of being built rather than born, or of knowing you are not biologically related to anyone else in the world. I call John Ericsson my father, but of course we are not related by blood because I have no blood. No matter what weapons and armor you have attached to your body, you will never understand what it means to be outside the web of life.

And you don't get to tell me to check my privilege just because I am "cis."

You are legally permitted to marry and vote and own property. I am not. The navy said I was property, and the Mariner's Museum will not allow me to rest peace -- or even in one piece. Admittedly, the overwhelming majority of my encounters with people claiming to be Otherkin/furries/therians/etc have been incredibly negative, but I have no way to be sure if they were trolls simply playing it up, a sampling of a noisy messed-up minority, or what. I just remind myself that for every highly-visible, loud, obnoxious, creepy stereotypical one, that there are probably at least half a dozen perfectly reasonable ones; like any group, it's always the noisy assholes that tend to stick in peoples' memory, not the well-mannered ones.

I think this has a lot to do with the other issues that people use their otherkin identity to escape from. On average, people with severe emotional problems are not that pleasant.

This topic entered my mind involving the idea of species dysphoria as it occasionally involves species like elves or dragons that never existed in real life in the first place. So NSG, what's your opinion on the topic of otherkin?

My opinion is sort of mixed as I can see identifying as a species that actually exists in real life or the fossil records, but I have no idea how a person can be elven-kin and claim to be allergic to iron.
