This topic entered my mind involving the idea of species dysphoria as it occasionally involves species like elves or dragons that never existed in real life in the first place. So NSG, what's your opinion on the topic of otherkin?

My opinion is sort of mixed as I can see identifying as a species that actually exists in real life or the fossil records, but I have no idea how a person can be elven-kin and claim to be allergic to iron.

I was contesting the idea that otherkin were equivalent to the Unabomber, which is untrue. I wasn't trying to disagree that Tumblr has some wackos, just that the wackos weren't necessarily representative of every user.

But regardless, I see it as different than gender/sexual identities so I wouldn't treat it the same way. Not that I know much about it despite the amount of time I dwell in it each day

Some time ago I stumbled upon a test to see what type of otherkin I might be, I got dragon. I was really disappointed, I was hoping to be a vaporkin.

Anyway I suppose otherkin people are just fine so long as they don't constantly remind me they are one every four seconds.

Depends on the type, I've seen two:

There's the kind who are essentially just roleplayers or furries, and don't take it seriously, which are harmless.

Then there's the kind who get around wearing a dog collar and tail and growel at people because they truly think they're a wolf born into a human body. Which is outright delusion.

It's also pretty telling that most of these type of otherkin are always big, impressive animals. Lions, wolves, bears, dragons and the like. Where are all the dungbeetle-kin?

I'm cool with them, but the comparisons with transgenderism must end. Sex is a pretty spectral thing, with varying spectra of characteristics in everyone, and it is thus totally understandable through neuropsychological mechanisms how gender identity and thus transgenderism and gender dysphoria can be A Thing on a more fundamental level than just social identity or learned behaviour - the studies coming out of neuroscience and endocrine genetics certainly suggest this.

The same simply cannot be said for Otherkin. There is no non-sociopsychological mechanism in place that supports the existential claim of someone who thinks they're a dog, or a cat, never mind things like dragons. Genetics cannot explain it - we diverged from these species 40 million years before they even came to exist, and there's no endocrinological explanation at hand either (there's no equivalent to sex hormones for other species in humans), nor any neuroanatomy that can suffice to support these thoughts.

Fortunately these comparisons do not usually come out of the mouths of otherkin; however, they don't exactly dissuade it what with their co-opting of Gender Dysphoria for their "Species Dysphoria" (somewhat insulted by that, as someone who's had the misfortune of suffering from high-intensity GD for most of her life and would rather it not be co-opted in such a way).

I am not cool with them, precisely for the reasons you mentioned.

Eh, childish idiots playing make believe to escape their own oft dull lives, though I'gevseen some turn it into an oppression olympics and compare themselves to trans and disabled folk.

The former is a bit weird but ultimately harmless, but the latter is actively harmful for trans acceptance. We should be polite but firm, making it clear that they're not animals and that their shit won't be tolerated nor babied, but willing to help them through the struggles that they use otherkinism to escape from. The ones that do it for special snowflake status and oppression points should be shunned, though.
