The world is full of wyverns, elves, and human toasters walking amongst us. That is the world according to otherkin. This topic entered my mind involving the idea of species dysphoria as it occasionally involves species like elves or dragons that never existed in real life in the first place. So NSG, what's your opinion on the topic of otherkin?

My opinion is sort of mixed as I can see identifying as a species that actually exists in real life or the fossil records, but I have no idea how a person can be elven-kin and claim to be allergic to iron.

The origins of them on the internet predate Tumblr by over a decade. The Elfinkind Digest was started on USENET by a University of Kentucky student back in 1990. That was meant for elves (otherkin identifying as elves) and people interested in mythology of elves.

Eh, like any other hobby, escapist fantasy, or spiritual system, there's always going to be some people who take it way too far, and plenty of other people who are sane and reasonable about it.

That is one of my things I was going to say. Some of them are a lot more reasonable as they may identify as a cat or a wolf. Creatures that are easily envisioned or even seen on a daily basis if it's cats. A toaster-kin on the other hand is a bit harder to grasp ahold of as it never was animate to begin with.

I deeply apologise, it was never my intention to cause offence to anyone. I'll take my warning on the chin, but how is believing yourself to be something you're clearly not anything other than a delusion?
