The origins of them on the internet predate Tumblr by over a decade. The Elfinkind Digest was started on USENET by a University of Kentucky student back in 1990. That was meant for elves (otherkin identifying as elves) and people interested in mythology of elves.

We gonna go and classify the rest of escapist fantasy as a mental illness too? Oh noes, I like to read fantasy novels and daydream about living in those fictional settings! Two-spirit is about gender, not identifying as an animal.
