I have to ask this, but why do so many Protestants seem to ignore Jesus words on divorce in Matthew 19?

Convenience. Pain and simple.

If you ever want to read it, I can send you a link to an article on abortion that illustrates this very well.

Because of cherrypicking. They cherrypick what they like about the Bible and ignore the rest. This is why they commonly cite that one law in Leviticus that speaks out against homosexuality, but ignore all of the other laws in Leviticus.

Indeed. If you do not view a certain group of people as human, it is quite easy to justify doing atrocious things to them. It's very unfortunate, but it seems to be embedded in human nature, as it has happened time and time again throughout history.

But protestants believe that Jesus is God, so why ignore the words of God and focus on a book that has a bunch of old Jewish laws?

Because it justifies a narrow, bigoted worldview some of them possess.

Like this example (yes, unrelated to same-sex marriage but a good example):

''I have done several abortions on women who have regularly picketed my clinics, including a 16 year old schoolgirl who came back to picket the day after her abortion, about three years ago. During her whole stay at the clinic, we felt that she was not quite right, but there were no real warning bells. She insisted that the abortion was her idea and assured us that all was OK. She went through the procedure very smoothly and was discharged with no problems. A quite routine operation. Next morning she was with her mother and several school mates in front of the clinic with the usual anti posters and chants. It appears that she got the abortion she needed and still displayed the appropriate anti views expected of her by her parents, teachers, and peers." (Physician, Australia)

"I've had several cases over the years in which the anti-abortion patient had rationalized in one way or another that her case was the only exception, but the one that really made an impression was the college senior who was the president of her campus Right-to-Life organization, meaning that she had worked very hard in that organization for several years. As I was completing her procedure, I asked what she planned to do about her high office in the RTL organization. Her response was a wide-eyed, 'You're not going to tell them, are you!?' When assured that I was not, she breathed a sigh of relief, explaining how important that position was to her and how she wouldn't want this to interfere with it." (Physician, Texas)

And that's how some Christians cherrypick when it comes to same-sex marriage being a sin but can justify divorcing their spouse regardless of what Scripture may say.

It's despicable at how these people have ruined Christianity for the sake of their own political agenda. They claim to be on Jesus's side, yet everything they do is against Jesus's teachings. It infuriates me.

It's all a matter of convenience. Plus, a person can say they're X or Y and put on the front of being that (hypocrisy) while doing otherwise behind closed doors.

Take Baptists, for example. The Southern Baptist strand. They consider drinking forbidden yet, I have met a few Southern Baptists who can really put away more booze than 30 dudes at a frat party. In church they pretend piety, at home they can ''sin'' like everyone else they condemn.

Which brings us back to the question of same sex marriage and the LGBTQIA+ community and the hate they receive from certain religious people. Convenience and demonizing.

In other people's religion it isn't. What are you gonna do when Buddhists marry a gay couple? Invade their temple?

Well that's not equal though is it?

Firstly, I was not saying that about racism. I meant something else.
Secondly, that is THEIR religion. I am not aggressive towards other people that believe other things I do not believe in, except if they are aggressive towards me because of what I believe in.
Thirdly, I already explained that I consider equal marriage and equal rights two different things.

1. Still, pretty shitty argument. Kids will get bullied for fucking anything. If there's nothing overtly obvious to bully a kid for, the bullies will actively look for it. You don't get rid of bullying by getting rid of differences. You get rid of bullying by teaching kids to embrace diversity, and stand up for the victim. That way, any dumbfucks that don't will not only not have an audience, but learn that nobody wants to put up with their bullshit anyhow.

2. What about me? I'm a Christian and I'm LGBT.

3. Opposing marriage equality is inherently opposing equal rights. Cishet people get to marry the person they love. Until recently, same sex couples could not. Therefore, we did not have equal rights.

Larthinia wrote:To everyone wondering why I don't agree with that, I know (in real life) adopted children of LGBT couples who said that they are bullied at school because of having same-sex parents and that they wished they'd have a normal family. One of my friends (adopted child of two mothers) is part of a international organization against LGBT's or something like that. So, basically, there are children who have a bad life due to having two same-sex parents. This is my argument.

In my religion, homosexuality is considered a sin, by the way. And, if anyone will say "You're a freaking homophobe!", I am not. I actually have LGBT friends and I have no problem with them. The thing is that, I believe that you are not born like this, and something/somebody that is part of your life made you be gay/transgender and so on. Because, God (yes, I believe in God, all atheists out there) did the man to be man and girl to be girl. There is no such thing as a boy being born and feeling like a girl inside or vice-versa. There's also no such thing as a girl/boy falling in love with somebody of their own gender, since God did not make us like that.

On the other hand, I agree with LGBT's having equal rights to us, since they are people like that. The only things I don't want to see is LGBT's marrying and having children (I explained why) or LGBT's showing their affection in public.

And you've just proven that you've no idea what you're talking about. Why would any of us choose this, when at the very least, we have to expect shit from people such as yourself and others, telling us we have to be lying when we say we didn't choose this, because you cannot accept the possibility that you're wrong? To say nothing of being beaten, harrassed, raped, killed, etc. Especially in the case of transgender people.

Ahh yes, I know how hypocritical these people can be. I myself was raised to be a Southern Baptist by my mother, and was formerly a Fundamentalist until I abandoned it when I realized how horrible it was.

The church my family went too was pretty corrupt. People would often put up a front and pretend to be a good Christian while committing devious acts in the background. It got so bad at one point that we stopped going there and went to another church.
