Every single law could be said to oppress some segment of the population to some extent. If gay marriage is legal, I want prostitution for example, to be legal nationwide.

You could fuck who you want but you couldn't marry who you want until now. Laws against prostitution don't oppress people.

Not that I'm against prostitution; it's just the two are incomparable.

The phrasing was weird. I don't think the idea was "in order for intolerance to be fixed all other churches must be destroyed", it was " in order for intolerance to be destroyed, we will need the other churches"

Well, the thing is that the Evangelical community of the United States isn't going to care if those damn Mary worshipping Papists start tolerating homosexuality.

They're the only Christian group, at least in an American context, that matters most.

Worldwide? Well, sure, they'd help, but then you'd run into the Muslims and other non-Christians.

It doesn't fucking affect you in any negative way, and having it unrecognized negatively affects those who need it. There is literally no reason to have a patchwork quilt of varying levels of equality across this nation.

I shouldn't /HAVE/ to move to another state to not be treated like a second class citizen.

Considering prostitution and ssm are not related, it is not an example of it coming true. Something always comes next even if the decision had been made the opposite way, something still would come next, that is kinda how the world works.

Nope. It's still FDA policy to turn them away.

Men who have had sex with other men (MSM), at any time since 1977 (the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in the United States) are currently deferred as blood donors. This is because MSM are, as a group, at increased risk for HIV, hepatitis B and certain other infections that can be transmitted by transfusion.

I figure this is because once they figured out that just not caring who was donating blood at all and seeing everyone dropping like flies as a result, they shifted to "well, then they just can't donate at all then, happy now?" and called it a day.

This is a terrible idea for a very large number of important reasons.

It's like he completely missed the part about how a US sergeant and his husband sued because the former got stationed in Tennessee and suddenly their marriage was effectively invalid.

Did they actually hunt down heretics and unbelievers back then? They personally engaged in witch hunts? You hold your opinions because you're blessed to live in a time where you can listen and discuss plenty of different view points. They didn't. Sometimes, people are bigots because they just don't know any better, not because they're fuckwits or whatever it was that you said before. Their personal beliefs seem rather irrelevant to their accomplishments.

Nope, the Supreme Court is the court-of-last-resort in the US. There can be no appeal of this decision. The only recourse opponents have is a constitutional amendment, a very difficult process made all the more difficult by the long history of jurisprudence that had long held that marriage is one of the fundamental rights of mankind.

How? You are the one calling for the legalisation of prostitution. If the person appealing to the slippery slope fallacy is the one coming up with the "next step" in the slope, I don't think it even qualifies as a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Saiwania wrote:Who knows what will come next after this, but I know it will be something.

And? If something you dislike comes after this, argue against it in its own terms. Come up with arguments against that something. Don't throw a legitimate social, political and cultural movement under the bus just because you are afraid to deal with a future issue.

I like gay marriage and I hate arbitrary government restrictions but I understand the dissents. This is more like the court deciding something is good than deciding it's supported by the constitution. Of course the same could be said about interracial marriage or basically anything that the courts done recently.
