Never heard of Iraq or Syria I guess. Quite a few people flying that flag now n days.

I also think you mean "slavery".

I don't see those countries being fully controlled yet, unless you do..... are you there with them?

I'm just quoting what you said so essentially you're correcting yourself like you should be.

South Carolina's legislature hasn't actually agreed to remove the confederate flag from display to my knowledge. Only that the current governor is in favor of that.

I bet if the Soviet flag was flown outside any state capitol there would be hell to pay.

And at least there were periods of peace and even of alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union. Between the CSA and the USA there was nothing but war.
Which, btw, leads me to think that flying the Battle Flag of the CSA is advocating directly war, more than mere secession or autonomy.

The law placing the Confederate flag atop the war memorial and forbidding any tampering with it can only be altered with a supermajority. So yes, they do.

Only in the South would so many people insist that a symbol of outright treason if not racism is a proud heritage to be defended.
Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

"It's the flag our ancestors fought for," is what I heard on the news this morning. My first thought was that the same claim could be made of the Nazi flag, and the ISIS flag, and the South African apartheid-era flag.

I wonder if Native Americans see the U.S. flag as a similar symbol of oppression, or if it would need to be one of the older versions from during the manifest destiny, westward migration period.

It's a 2/3 vote that they have to get in both houses before removing that flag.

Actually, 66%

If it was 60% it'd be a bit of an insult, don't you think?

I don't understand why the Confederate flag needed to be there. Fly the US and state flags above government buildings if you desire, different flags for special occasions are fine as well. Yes the Confederate flag is a symbol of southern history and its my understanding plenty of people in that part of the world feel strongly about it; they can fly it outside their houses, put it on their car, tattoo it on their arm, put it on a t shirt ETC but not from a government building.

No, it is South Carolina. Do you even know how the Palmetto Tree got added to the flag? At Charleston during the American Revolution, the rebels built a fort out of Palmetto logs. No one thought the fort would actually sustain a artillery barrage, but the cannon balls, literally, bounced off the logs. And therefore the Palmetto tree was added to the flag.
