I got mixed up for a second there, too. Xe is he/her, xir is his/hers/him/her. Still, those who identify as they seem content with they; that's all that matters.

It works out for me though I usually get corrected after I've know the person for a little while, usually not when we first meet. I would prefer to get corrected right away though

Huh, I never thought about it that way.

Imagine that for several months (in fact, I believe, the better part of a year) the same half or dozen or so posters spend page after page after page on largely the same emotive topic that tends to attract trolls that adopt extreme views from both ends of the continuum (if such a word makes sense) and this same core of posters experiences very little in terms of the stance that they take. Now, do you think, in those circumstances, that views on why things are done and how they are done will develop? They sort of have to. Even once you start making things way too personal you run out of rationales pretty quickly and half the argument is how it's posted. Things got messy. And pretty much only stopped when one of the ideological positions left the site en masse for unrelated reasons.

The point is, you spend enough time doing something, you either stop doing it or get a lot more philosophical about what is going on. Lurkers is what struck me because I am unwilling to let go of the sides mentality. That approach works for other people.

My views on lurkers also overlap substantially with my views on the nature of the forum itself (see earlier tonight when we were discussing NS's trans community a few pages back) which is why you get: "Today's lurker is tomorrow's poster."

Another way of looking at it that I came across when I was trying to find an approximate genesis/better expression of the idea is this:

Speaking as someone who learned the basis of debate from the movie 'Thank you for smoking', I believe this relative has a more juvenile form of the argument style perfected in that movie.

Namely, 'I don't have to be right, you have to be wrong, and if you are wrong, then I am right'

Who does the judging is not explained in this way of thinking about things (I believe we accepted that was the audience in that thread, which I'd equate to lurkers) but it's a neat idea.

That's another way to go about it. I really REALLY dislike potential butt hurt scenarios so I'm gonna keep that in mind next time
