I am a huge Gene Wilder fan. I only know Mostel from the Producers (to be fair, my cinematic experience in general is limited), but his performance there was impeccable.
The bigger budget for the remake just didn't add that much, and it couldn't compare to the older casting. It wasn't a movie that really profited from having a better technical backing. Both are still exceptionally good, all in all, but the remake is a timeless work of art.

A brilliant concept for a movie. "A Fascist and an Arse". Could be a light-hearted comedy, could be a psychological thriller/historical drama, you won't know until you back the kickstarter and preorder the physical copy.
