Rangers traded Raanta and Stepan to DeAngelo, and the 7th overall pick.

Now that's a deal.

Raanta and Stepan to the 'Yotes for a 1st round pick and a bag of peanuts. Why even bother with the peanuts?

Hawks were in cap jail and needed to dump salary, especially with Hossa's contract needing to be dealt with.

but man, Panarin is really, really good.

They didn't really dump salary, but they did pick up contracts that expire later, rather than needing to be negotiated - with raises for the players - sooner.

After all of those moves, Chicago is STILL over the cap.

As a Canucks fan, I am enjoying this way too much.

They should trade Hossa. Nothing against the man, but he's pushing forty and making 5 mil a year. They need to get some breathing room. Or they could try to deal Saad to another team. Or both. I think both.

[EDIT] Just realized, that site doesn't have Hossa on IR. His salary won't count against the cap next season because he and the Hawks have announced he won't be playing because of medication side-effects to that skin condition he has. So the Hawks are under the cap by about three million.

So I guess they don't need to trade him.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/calgary-olympic-winter-games-bid-1.4174924

So this is interesting.

If Calgary is left as the only city bidding to hold the 2026 Winter Olympics, the IOC has suggested will help us find "significant savings" to bring down the estimated $4.6 billion price tag. Naturally, preparing for the 2026 Winter Olympics would mean replacing the Saddledome, because it's not really an acceptable venue now let alone in ten years. Could be that, if Calgary is the only one left in the running, the Flames might get a new arena that the IOC will help foot down the road.

I would be OK with this.

McDavid is reportedly getting $13.25 million a year for 8 years.

I hope Chiarelli knows that there's still 22 other guys on the roster that need to get paid, too. Now 96% of the roster has to divide up 80% of the cap in a few years.

Christ, not even Crosby is making that kind of money. Is Chia-pet high or something?

At the time of Crosby's first big contract, the cap was lower so Crosby's cap hit was about the same percentage of what McDavid might be getting. Before signing that contract though, our payroll was the lowest in the league, and we were still in the bottom half after it took effect. Also, the cap rose might higher then than it seems to be doing now.
Crosby's current contract for the same amount, is a total steal. Hooray for superstitions (and for contract rules that are against the rules now)!

Patrick Sharp has signed a 1-year, $1 million contract. With the Hawks.

I don't know how Stan Bowman pulled this one off.

The Sharks have given Martin Jones a six year extension, and Marc Edouard Vlasic an eight year extension. Locking in some key pieces for a good long time.

I'm excited. Should be awesome to watch. So many good teams, so many great rivalries, players, historic teams... Poor Devils though. I have no sympathy for them or their fans anyway.

Patrick Marleau has signed a 3 year deal with Toronto.

After 19 seasons in San Jose, it's weird and sad to watch him go. I wish him nothing but the best of luck.

Very true. Also is it me or does nobody talk about the Flyers-Rangers rivalry? Very underrated in my opinion...

It's not really a rivalry anymore with, more just a bitter blood fued. Watching Hank glove Giroux's shot and shut the door on the Flyers season was one of the high points of the season for me.

Reto Berra moves back to the NHL and massively changes things for the Swiss league by doing so (his new team, Fribourg-Gottéron, is now left with only one goalie who is 20 and never played a NLA match before and no backup because they already traded away their former starter) - do you guys think he has a chance of making the team for the Ducks? Our media generally say no, as he is nominally only the number 3 goalie. In which case this is a bit of a weird move, to be honest, given that he would have made more money, been closer to home and be a sure #1 in Fribourg... and the level in the AHL generally isn't exactly much better than in Switzerland.
