By signing the worst +/- in the league. By not investing in speed. By not kicking Murray into shape. Also injuries to all the good depth. TFW you have the best roster in the league and are missing the playoffs.

Oh so it's like the Steelers curse being replicated somewhat on the Penguins. Goddamnit, why must the city be cursed like this?

How the fuck do the Penguins go from Stanley Cup winners for the second year in a row to out of the playoffs before the end of the season in two years?

Because they can't stack the team with top draft prospects anymore now that they don't perennially suck.

Not to mention a possible complacency after two consecutive Stanley Cups and the old Pittsburgh tradition of constantly playing down to their opponents (which mainly affects the Steelers but sometimes spreads to the Pens*). Or maybe they're just preparing for a tank year next season, since it's too late to tank now.

*Since the Pirates aren't really a good team, this is more an inversion as you'd probably get teams playing down to THEM instead. And there isn't a pro basketball team there so I can't really comment.

Well the old ABA team won the first ever championship with Connie Hawkins (one of the saddest stories in sports history) then proceeded to suck for the rest of their existence.

Well Kessel tripped like a toddler on ice and let Columbus get an easy goal. Seriously, how does Phil Fucking Kessel trip like that? Penguins got fat on back to back cups and now the D is shit, offense can't control the puck and Murray is lacking consistent confidence.

Once again, either complacency after two back-to-back Cups or the old Pittsburgh tradition of playing down to their opponents that normally affects the Steelers. However, it's not all bad as the Pens could easily come back from that (much like the Stars did after Stefan fluffed that empty netter about ten years ago) but they're now in third place in their division so, unless they mess up royally, they've still got a chance of making it into the playoffs yet again.

Seriously though if it wasn't for the defense giving up 4 goals a game when they lose it wouldn't be so frustrating. Penguins can smack the Broons around but give up 4 to the Jackets. Why?

In other news Toronto should consider either losing a few games or going on a tear so said Broons do not embaress them yet again. Seriously if Marleau and Tavares retire without cups because Toronto is THAT snakebitten I might just die.

Jackets were much more desperate. That sort of desperation is difficult to sustain.

So the Lightning became the first team to clinch a play-off spot. Which isn't really that much of a surprise considering how well they've been playing all season. Now it's just a question of whether they'll choke in the SC Finals, the Conference Finals, the first or second round or start choking early and end up making do with a wild card spot.

wishful thinking Prediction: Bruins will offer McAvoy and Heinen 1m 1/yr qualifying offers, to try and hold out to the 20/21 season. Both players elect to go to RFA, Rangers offer 3.5 m 3-5 yr contract, Bruins can’t afford to match, McAvoy plays for NY next season.

By popular demand, or not so popular demand, the NHL playoff predictions thread's back. Here are them rules:

You pick the winner in the playoff bracket; it don't matter if they win 4-0 or 4-3, but they gotta win for you to score a point. You can update your picks each round. Once the puck drops in the first game, no more predictions can be made in that round. Here are them points:

Round 1: 16 teams, 8 points, one point per winner
Round 2: 8 teams, 8 points, two points per winner
Round 3: 4 teams, 8 points, four points per winner
Round 4: 2 teams, 8 points, eight points per winner
Round 5: if you're reading this, you're not paying attention :P

My picks:

West: Predators, Jets, Flames, Golden Knights
East: Lightning, Bruins, Capitals, Penguins

Wow, the season's over already? Huh, guess that's what happens when you're not paying attention. Anyway, let's see how wrong I'll be this year, with bold and green being my choices:

Tampa Bay vs Columbus: The President Trophy's winner vs a team that's never been past the first round in their existence. Granted the Lightning have a tendency to choke but they're not going to choke this early.
Boston vs Toronto: I made a prediction last year that said that the Leafs will beat the Bruins and it turned out to be the other way around. Let's not make that mistake again.
Washington vs Carolina: While I doubt the Caps will retain the trophy this season, I also doubt that they'd go out this early.
NYI vs Pittsburgh: I also have few doubts that the Pens will be as good as they were a couple of seasons ago but I also doubt that they'd choke this early. And while the Islanders have made a bit of an improvement this season I don't think they're second round material just yet.
Nashville vs Dallas: While I want to like the Stars for that actual Stephen Hillenburg tribute, I have my doubts that they'd push past the Preds, who are going through a bit of a golden age at the moment (or possibly halfway through their eligibility for a legacy of failure).
Winnipeg vs St. Louis: The Jets still have that momentum going from last season whereas St. Louis had that amazing winning streak earlier on in the season. This'll be tough but I guess Winni might have enough to make it through.
Calgary vs Colorado: I couldn't decide between these two so I decided to flip for it. The coins came up in Calgary's favour so there we go.
San Jose vs Vegas: Partly because I don't want to copy Shof's predictions verbatim but also there's a good chance the Sharks' would get their revenge on the Golden Knights. Granted it's also unlikely and the GKs would probably win this series but oh well.

But if anyone must know how many games: Tampa in 5, Boston in 6, Washington in 5 or 6, Pittsburgh in 6, Nashville in 6, Winnipeg in 5, Calgary in 7 and San Jose in 7.

Bruins over Leafs in 5
Canes over Caps in 7
Islanders over Pens in 7

Flames over Avalanche in 6
Sharks over Knights in 7
Stars over Preds in 6
Blues over Jets in 6

I haven't really been keeping track of anyone other than San Jose, so this is largely a shot in the dark, and probably some wishful thinking on my part, but oh well.
