So the Chicago Blackhawks' mascot got into a fight with a fan the other day, which begs the question: Who would win in a fight between Tommy Hawk (the aforementioned mascot) or Gritty? Not necessarily a fight to the death or even a bog-standard hockey fight, just a regular fight between two mascots. Granted, Gritty's got a lot of mass on him, which is why I think he'd win, but still what do you guys think?

A five game win streak puts the Sharks closer to where they should be in the standings. Meanwhile the Lightning are playing out of their minds so far this season.

Happens when one team trades them all their best players over three years, cause they can't figure out it's the coach who sucks.

Especially when it turns out he'll be on the naughty list this year. Either that or he's already been put on it and he's getting revenge for that.

And yet both teams are still going to choke come playoff time. Both in the second round if they even make it that far. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd love it if the Sharks finally ended their legacy of failure much like the Caps did but I just don't see it happening anytime soon.

I can't disagree. The Sharks especially look as choke prone as ever *longsuffering sigh*

The Lightning have a better chance of holding it together and making a run I think. But I still wouldn't bet on it.

So the World Juniors has started and, well, here's the Canada-Denmark game summed up in a nutshell. Yes, it really was that bad for the Danes. I would've made a meme about it (using that same scene but a different shot) but I'm too lazy and I couldn't find a good base image.

I guess. Or, at the very least, the goal song needs to be changed after the 8th or 9th goal. Maybe something a bit more fitting like the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme or Hit 'Em Up.

Bloody hell. I mean, granted it's to be expected because we don't really think of Turkey when it comes to ice hockey but still, I would've called for a mercy rule after the first period or something.

P.S. Bad news for Kings fans (but good news for division rivals) as UT has done a video about your team.

From the article:

The newspaper reported that according to police the mascot -- a man in a foam-beaked hawk costume -- was punched and put into a headlock by an attacker shortly after the Blackhawks' overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets at United Center in Chicago on Saturday night. The video that swept through social media shows the mascot responding by body-slamming the fan to the ground and punching him.

I'd give that mascot a celebratory hockey stick. That was epic. And if it's that same guy in a mascot suit - he'd beat the shit out of Gritty.

So it's finals time in the World Juniors, so who does everyone think will win? USA or Finland? I mean, I'm probably going to pick the USA but I won't be surprised if the Finns win it instead.

He could, though I'd like to point out that the quote you selected kind of made it sound like the mascot lost the fight (when in reality it was the other way around). Not to mention that Gritty would probably hurt his hand on Tommy's beak. But, either way, I still think Gritty would win.

Also, speaking of hockey sticks, Sidney Crosby gave one of his to a fan of a rival team because the guy actually delivered some chirps that he thought was funny. Really.

Really? I thought that he kicked ass. In my book, if you can body slam and punch someone in the face after you've been punched in the face and headlocked, you're the one that's kicking ass and taking names. Anyways, I think he'd beat the crap out of Gritty, and I stand by that!

And yeah - that was a class act by Crosby. Sadly, the fan will probably go easy on him next time :P

I'm a little late on it but if Switzerland can beat Sweden and Finland can win the tournament, I think Québec deserves a team at the WJHC. If Scotland can have a rugby team, Québec should have a hockey team.

As the 37th World Cup of Hockey is starting over on NS Sports, it turns out that next year's real-life WCoH won't be taking place. Which is kind of a shame because, apparently, there was going to be some sort of European qualifications, which might've been fun to see even if Great Britain would get blown out of the water (which is what'll happen in the World Championships in May).

Equipe nationale du Quebec wrote:I'm a little late on it but if Switzerland can beat Sweden and Finland can win the tournament, I think Québec deserves a team at the WJHC. If Scotland can have a rugby team, Québec should have a hockey team.

I guess, though I think the reason why England, Scotland, Wales and both Irelands play separately is due to some sort of grandfather clause. Because, during the early days of soccer and rugby, England and Scotland were the only countries* who would be able to have a full proper international game. And, even though both sports spread throughout the world resulting in national teams in other countries, there wasn't really enough support for a grand, unified official UK team. Sure there are proper unified teams (Team GB Olympic Team for soccer and the British and Irish Lions for rugby [union]) but they only really play on special occasions or, with the latter, a tour every four years. At least, that's what I'm getting from a number of sites.

Besides, even if that wasn't a problem, Quebec doesn't seem to have its own governing body for ice hockey. Though I'm in favour of some sort of commemorative Quebec team that plays friendlies against other teams, since there were separate teams for England and Scotland for a while as well as a Catalonian team that played a few games. I probably wouldn't rule out some sort of series against or tour of some other nation with a Quebec team made up of players born in the province either.

* Don't ask, I don't know either.

And just as you say that, they then lose 6-3 to the Wesleys a couple of days later. Still, congrats on the seven-game streak Sharks.

I wasn't aware of this grandfather clause. Québec does have an hockey federation within Hockey Canada called Hockey Québec. I think the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) doesn't mind if Québec gets a national team but Hockey Québec has to ask the IIHF to compete internationally, with the approval of Hockey Canada (but they probably won't approve it). They still haven't done it but talks about a Team Québec is heating up in here. So I'm here on some internet forums trying to promote a team Québec. :p

Meanwhile, Anaheim is doing the opposite. :(

On the upside, they look like they'll be going into the play-offs as a wild-card, so it's not all bad. Especially since things don't look as peachy in the Central Division.

They’re still gonna blow it in the playoffs

Or, worst case scenario, they get complacent and end up missing the play-offs.

* Don't ask, I don't know either.

I wasn't aware of this grandfather clause.

Neither way I but then again I never really thought about why the Home Nations competed separately in different sports. That being said, for the longest time, there was a Great Britain national rugby league team (that'll be reforming this year), though in all fairness I'm pretty sure the majority of the team were English players. Not to mention that, with the sole expection of the French team Catalans Dragons and [very nearly] the Canadian Toronto Wolfpack, the Super League is pretty much an English league.

Equipe nationale du Quebec wrote:Québec does have an hockey federation within Hockey Canada called Hockey Québec. :p

And that's what happens when you go on a lengthy Google search to find out why the Home Nations compete separately in different sports but don't look up if there's a Quebecois hockey board. Seriously, thanks for sharing that.

Also, I don't think that the IIHF would allow a Quebec team into the tournament due to the fact that they're not a sovereign state. However, that being said, I think that Hockey Canada should set up a tournament where teams made up of players from each province* compete in a single round-robin tournament, maybe with a play-off system for the best however-many teams, sort of like a Canadian version of the Sheffield Shield but obviously with a few tweaks. Failing that, something like an ice hockey version of CONIFA would be a good way to go, since it would mean that a somewhat official Quebec team could be formed to play international games, though the downside would be finding enough teams to keep it somewhat afloat.
