Any thoughts on Germany vs Poland? Seems like German media are in two minds about it. On the one hand not winning that game seems not good enough, and the forwards had a bad day all around. But on the other hand the whole team did a lot better in defence and barely let Poland get dangerous, even on the counter. So there are some people that felt like the thing they worried about the most in terms of doing well over the tournament was a lot better and so they felt pretty good about the game.

Poland defended very well as well, neither set of forwards felt like constant threats like they certainly can do. I think Germany could have done better but it was still a solid performance. Hector especially had a great night from left back, and the rest of the team gave him the ball when they noticed the Polish defence overload their right flank letting Hector pick his cross.
The end line: Poland aren't the pushovers their record versus Germany would show. They performed very well and shouldn't be likened to a second rate team. Are they good enough to compete year in and out for places in the quarters and semis? That remains to be seen. I think they're on that verge though. Can definitely be an exciting team to watch.

The best part of the match was that there wasn't too much sideways and backwards passing. When they had the ball both sides pushed the attack.

Do you listen to yourself? If Milik wasn't a complete bottler Poland would have won 2-0. They got better chances than Germany did. Also I love Ozil.

I was just reflecting some of the analysis in the German papers. Boateng's interview after the game was more negative. The point is though that things were much better than in the Ukraine game. Poland didn't have a single shot on goal. If Milik had touched that cross that would have been different, but then if Goetze hadn't kicked the ball at Fabianski a couple of times... You know what I mean. The defenders took Lewandowski out of the game entirely and lost track of Milik once or twice in return - not saying they had a perfect game, but certainly an improved one.

I think that relative to the Ukraine game the German defensive effort was far better. Germany controlled the game and when Poland had the ball the whole team did a lot better moving together to get it back. The problem was that going forward they took too long and couldn't play the incisive passes that get them through. Which leaves crosses that came only from Hector today, making it easier to defend... Presumably that was an instruction to deal with how Poland plays on the break or something. And as I said before, no one in the centre particularly suited to making something of them.

And as Auromena said, Poland are a good team. I know about their record against Germany, but all the matches I can recall between them (certainly in tournaments) have been close affairs. Loew is still trying to work out the best way to get through the knock-out stages, tweaking things along the way. Given how easy it is to get out of the group stage (especially in that group) this is a luxury he can afford. And in that respect this improved effort against a much better side was still a positive I think. So as a Germany supporter I'm not worried (yet).

Croatia v Czech Republic game held up for several minutes as Croatian fans throw some dozen flares on the field, and a steward may have been injured by an exploding firework. Police are now lined up in front of the stands.

Rabble, rabble, rabble.

ETA: Games ends 2 - 2 after 99 minutes. Fucking lol.

Low actually complained about the Tournament expansion, claiming that it "allows weaker teams to join and enabling them to play boring, defensive football."

I do agree with him, but it does open up for other nations to make an important tournament.
