Jeez. I'm somewhat regretting my vote. I put my support in for the local NDP candidate based on polls that showed the Tories out far ahead in my riding, thinking it wouldn't matter much anyways.

Now the Liberal candidate is winning by just 4 votes.

The Liberals can afford to lose the lead in 15 ridings and still have a majority.

Well, yeah, but it's not the only thing they ever talk about. We've not devolved into American-style politics quite yet.

Tell me more about how significant of a contribution we made to the last two major wars.

Casualties aren't a marker of contributions, you know what is?

WWI:
  • Second Battle of Ypres
  • Battle of Passchendaele
  • Capture of Vimy Ridge
We were so well-regarded by the Allied Powers, especially for the near single-handed capture of Vimy, that we were given our own representative to the Treaty of Versailles and to the League of Nations.

WWII:
  • Dieppe Raids
  • Battle of Hong Kong
  • Battle of Ortona
  • D-Day at Juno Beach
  • Liberating the Netherlands

Seriously, pick up a history book.

Why so we can pretend to be one of the cool kids? Canada's military wouldn't be able to hold off any one of the guys who might want to grab a piece of our territory for even a day. And our navy's patrols of the Arctic are less than a joke to Russia with their 55+ nuclear subs. The reality is that no matter who decides to invade us we're screwed if the US doesn't help out.

So the whole point is that we don't be depend on the US.[/quote]

Corrected.

Limiting Canadian involvement to literally the amount of casualties as a % of all casualties is literally one of the most fucking stupid ways of gauging its contribution. In WWI the Canadian Corps was one of the shock troops units for the British Empire, along with the ANZAC's. We played a huge role in Arras, Ypres, the 100 Days Offensive, etc.

In WWII we were instrumental in keeping the Atlantic convoys safe. The RCN became one of the most effective anti-submarine forces on the planet. Not to mention our role in Italy and Northern Europe from 43-45.

Most countries cannot defend themselves to any of the major military powers, guess they should just pack it in eh. I mean it's not like we historically were very active in peacekeeping and lately have played a major role in Afghanistan. There's also the fact that we have to contribute to NATO, and really only Iceland has an excuse to not really have any military (plus their inclusion is due to strategic considerations).

Good thing we're part of NATO. Doesn't mean we should have absolutely nothing. I mean military's are also used for other things other than direct defence. This is some low level of logic you're working on here.

Corrected.

Juno Beach, The Battle of the Atlantic. The, quite frankly, mammoth contributions of money, material, and personnel to military forces and civilian population in Europe. Canada was a major part of the Allied victory during WWII.

[EDIT] And the only reason that we don't have nuclear subs is because the US cock-blocked our purchase back when. Besides which, military strength is not a great indicator of power anymore.

You missed another event Cami. We liberated all of the Netherlands by ourselves in WW2. Also, we sort of took on both Croatian and Serbian militias at the same time in the Medak Pocket at one point in the fight.

Harper has announced the election is voided.

I would suggest armed resistance by the Canadians but sadly they already banned most of the guns.

I don't think we have any. Recounts are granted by Elections Canada when ridings are decided by a margin of less than one thousandth of the total votes cast, so it sounds like it's possible we'll get one of those.
