Climategate II: The Sequel

Postby Neu Mitanni » Sun Jan 24, 2010 6:50 pm

Yet another flaw in the IPCC's "global warming" report has come to light, as a scientist has admitted using unverified data to support a "Himalaya glaciers are melting!" panic:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... ified.html

Not only was the data unverified, but it was used to advance a political agenda:

Daily Mail wrote:
The scientist behind the bogus claim in a Nobel Prize-winning UN report that Himalayan glaciers will have melted by 2035 last night admitted it was included purely to put political pressure on world leaders.

Dr Murari Lal also said he was well aware the statement, in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), did not rest on peer-reviewed scientific research.

In an interview with The Mail on Sunday, Dr Lal, the co-ordinating lead author of the report’s chapter on Asia, said: ‘It related to several countries in this region and their water sources. We thought that if we can highlight it, it will impact policy-makers and politicians and encourage them to take some concrete action.

“It had importance for the region, so we thought we should put it in.”

(Emphasis added)

So: how many more revelations like this will it take before “global warming” takes its place next to astrology, phrenology, vitalism, phlogiston and other discredited theories?
Confrontation and Conflagration.

You don't even have to buy into the political inferno that is what the radicals spout out of their lips to view such a comparison of natural climate fluctuation to discredited pseudosciences and "theories" as utterly imbecilic.

Global warming has been happening probably since the Earth first had climate--it's not even bound just to Earth itself--to compare it to phrenology and astrology, to call it a "theory," as if we don't know it has happened, might be happening, and will continue to happen, or that it exists to begin with, is utterly idiotic, and should be viewed as such no matter where you're sitting around the table.

Sad but true. It was actually warmer in the 1400's.

New Rule: People must be prohibited from using gate as a suffix implying a political disaster on pain of death.

Especially fake disasters.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.- Carl Sagan

I agree with Rhodmhire, human caused or not, there is irrevocable evidence for climate change.

Its cold in some places so obviously global warming isn't happening! - The Opposition

I don't give a shit if people call it Global Warming, Global Climate Change, or Al Gore's Wet Dream. The truth of the matter is; something is happening and it is not good. The Polar Ice caps are melting, as they melt they lower the ocean's temperature and raise the level of the ocean even by a small fraction. Already massive storms of unrivaled intensity are becoming more and more common; in other places the weather is changing some places get colder and dryer, some places hotter and wetter, and some get a combination thereof (where I live we are getting warmer shorter wetter winters and cooler dryer longer summers, its already affecting farms). Entire nations are being lost to the ocean as the tides raise, and there is an entire segment of the world that doesn't give a damn. That in itself would not be so alarming if not for the fact that they almost to an individual adamantly oppose the idea that anything is actually happening or calmly state that the changes will only end up being beneficial since we will enjoy the rising temperatures.

It reminds me of the movie Erik the Viking when the Island of Hy-Brasil is sinking and the residents refuse to accept the fact because "You don't know the safety protocols."

It doesn't matter about what politics you ascribe to, whether or not its man-made, or whether or not you care. ITS FUCKING HAPPENING.

hmm, weird that nobody actually commented on the weirdness of the whole paragraph. i mean, honestly?

Glaciers in the Himalaya are receding faster than in any other part of the world (see Table 10.9) and, if the present rate continues, the likelihood of them disappearing by the year 2035 and perhaps sooner is very high if the Earth keeps warming at the current rate. Its total area will likely shrink from 500,000 to 100,000 km2 by the year 2035 (WWF, 2005).

but if you check the comments, it was mainly just overlooked, and the only substantive comments were aimed more at the fact that some of the glaciers in the region are growing due to changed weather patterns.

well, you caught us, denialists. one poorly sourced, oddly written paragraph and our entire climate conspiracy is undone.

oh, btw, 2009 was the second hottest year on record, and the past decade was hotter than the one before, which was hotter than the one before that, etc. but keep digging for those typos, super sleuths.

Oddly enough, the correlation of those who have utter faith in a book so completely riddled with illogical statements, completely contradictory information and more with those who deny the basic, unquestionable facts of global warming...

Well, it's a weird disconnect, that's for sure.

But in the 1400's, the earth didn't have almost seven billion people on it. That's what everyone forgets about global climate change, it doesn't have to melt the ice caps and flood the coast line to kill millions or billions. All it has to do is make the worlds breadbaskets a little bit wetter, or dryer, hotter or colder, either way, and world food production will drop drastically, leading to food shortages, famine, and a whole lot of dead people.
