Personally since this is the nth thread not cleverly masking Game of Thrones references I would ask to be tried by the new gods, and the old ones thus letting them decide my innocence or guilt.

Personally, I would try out the Bronn strategy. Using my speed, flexibility, and tactical manoeuvres to evade and tire out the state's champion. I would use the full length of the stadium.

I would only go on the attack once he's tired out and try to get a well-aimed stab in.

It's still a gamble but it could work.

"Anything can happen" sure, if you're well trained or incredibly lucky. But better off well trained.

I'd go on with the trial, since even if I get the death penalty, in the States you tend to serve a life sentence before the execution, afaik.

Whatever fighter the state chose, they'd undoubtedly be vastly bigger and more experienced than I was. I'd have to stick it out through the trial. The other choice is obviously death.

You can try to do so by calling out for him before the media.

Maybe he'll bow to political pressure. Unlikely to work though but who knows. He's not legally obligated to meet you in the field of course. But you could try calling him a chicken or trying to get to his sense of honour somehow.

Also OP, can I get something other than a gladius? I'm decently trained with a spear, I'd rather fight with that. Besides, IIRC, in GoT you get to choose your weapon. I choose a spear and shield.

I'm not sure the state will agree to that. Your lawyer could plead it. The thing is, the Gladiator movie has a very strong cultural influence in the USA and people want to see a fight with the Gladius similar to the Maximus Commodus duel.

I'd wager most people alive haven't seen the Gladiator and only remember that one line from it. Besides, most Americans probably have no idea what gladiators wore/fought with, and are really only aware that they fought to the death.

There's a decent medieval combat scene near where I live, so I've been getting into European martial arts. I'm a mediocre fencer, but I can swing a hammer and use a spear like nobody's business.

Bigger =/= stronger/tougher. I'm not very tall, but I'm real burly. I've taken down dudes bigger than me, a lot of the time because they don't think I can, as a result of being taller.

I think you have a point about size. After all, size doesn't matter when you are flat on your back. Also, someone told me that the big men fall just as easily as the little men (if you know what you are doing). It sounds like you are experienced.

In Texas? I doubt it. I've never been to Texas in my life. My own record is pretty minimal, too. That being said, as per the circumstances in the OP, I'm not going to hedge my bets on winning a normal civilian trial, due to some issues.

Its very hard to win in a trial where the State believes it has a very strong case. Without some kind of procedural muck-up on their part, you're probably going down.

Also, most appeals are unsuccessful.
