what "race" do I check?

So I was filling out a registration form for school, and I had to check a box for my race. The choices were along the lines of "white, black, Asian, native american, south pac. Islander, native Alaskan, etc." Then a y/n box asking if I was Hispanic or latino. I'm a second generation Mexican American, anf my skin is not especially light, nor very dark. What should I check? I thought yes on Hispanic/latino and white for the other one (scince I am American and lighter than he rest of my family)? Do I even check one for the first question?

I dunno. You're skin is not 'especially light' nor is it 'very dark' so I don't know what to say; I don't know what you look like. There are of course white Hispanics but there's no way for us to know whether you are one or not.

I struggle to believe that; I've seen quite a few black Hispanics. A black Spaniard/Mexican/Argentinian doesn't become white with a passport and Spanish fluency.

If they are a black Hispanic then they'd probably check "Black".

So sorry, about that guess I just got lazy and justified it somehow. But thank you, although im not that light I'll just do as jamzania says.

More accurately: Hispanics are *sometimes* considered white. Especially if they have a significant amount of European ancestry, but also generally.

To the best of my knowledge, it's mostly the Cuban community that makes a big deal out of this. They resented having to choose between Hispanic and White, hence the weird forms.

Well, you see, this is the issue: "racially" Hispanic can mean that you're a fully native Aztec who has been acculturated by Spanish imperialism. Or it could mean that you're a fully European Spaniard whose family happens to have lived in Mexico for a few generations. To name two. So it's not really a race.
