Saudi Arabia to purchase nuclear weapon

Postby Steamtopia » Sun May 17, 2015 2:04 pm

http://www.thetower.org/2046-report-sau ... iran-deal/

Saudi Arabia had made the “strategic decision” to purchase a nuclear weapon from Pakistan amid the ongoing negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, a former American defense official said in a report published today in The Sunday Times.

“There has been a longstanding agreement in place with the Pakistanis and the House of Saud has now made the strategic decision to move forward.”

While the official did not believe “any actual weaponry has been transferred yet”, it was clear “the Saudis mean what they say and they will do what they say”, following last month’s Iranian outline nuclear deal. …

Asked whether the Saudis had decided to become a nuclear power, the official responded: “That has to be the assumption.”

The assessment is shared by an American intelligence official who spoke to the Times, saying that “hundreds” of CIA employees are trying to determine if Pakistan has already supplied any nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia.

The New York Times reported last week that Saudi Prince Turki al-Faisal said that the West’s emerging deal with Iran would “[open] the door to nuclear proliferation.”

Other experts, including two former American secretaries of state, a former official of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and the editor of the influential magazine Foreign Policy, have recently warned that the emerging nuclear deal with Iran could lead to nuclear proliferation in the Middle East.

Middle East arms race? Middle East arms race. I don't like where this is heading.

Until it's reported on more trustworthy news sites, I'm going with this being wrong.

It would also violate the non proliferation treaty, so Saudi Arabia would replace Iran as enemy no 1 in the middle east.

*edit* OK there have been sufficient sources to persuade me this is real, always better to be sceptical then fooled.

Well at this point we might as well have a nuke Oprah give away within the Middle East.

If the United States wants to maintain a consistent approach against nuclear proliferation, it has an obligation to speak out against this.

This does not make Saudi Arabia a nuclear state any more than, say, Germany is.

Considering how close US-Saudi relations are, most unlikely.

I know this has been touted as a possibility, and since the Iranian situation it has received a lot more publicity, but I'm not sure the Saudis would take such a bold and divisive step as actually putting a weapon in their nation.

Purchasing it is a different matter - one could argue its a precaution so that they could transfer it quickly should the need arise.

I don't really see how this is newsworthy. Pakistan and Israel have nuclear weapons in the Middle East and Iran is trying to build one, but the Israels keep interfering. Who cares?

Because a country acquiring nuclear weapons tends to be rather news worthy.

Also Pakistan isn't in the Middle East.

Ah well, sue me for getting my geography wrong. I don't really care about some Islamic hellhole anyway, they can build their nuclear weapons if they wish.

Then it would reveal the hipocracy of US foreign policy and likley start an nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
I also think Europe would have more of a problem with it, considering their proximity to the Middle East.

I don't see the problem with the country who used to hide Bin Laden selling nukes to the country of origin of Bin Laden. Why should anyone?

They may very well oppose Saudi Arabia obtaining nuclear weapons. That doesn't mean however they'll become enemy no. 1.

Then of course there is whom the US views as worse and so may be willing to let some things slide more easily if it's considered the lesser evil. Which is one reason why we saw the US support plenty of dictatorships during the Cold War era since they were considered less bad than communist regimes.

A nuclear race in the Middle East, damn, the World is becoming a more dangerous place. At least Russia and US don't let religious fanatics near nukes.

Every nuclear state, including Pakistan, should speak out against this. Not just the US. It'd be nice to get a joint UNSC perma five statement for a change. Especially on an issue where they all agree. So listen up, US, Russia, China, France and UK. Put Ukraine down for a moment. Prevent nuclear escalation. Then, and only then can you go back to playing with Ukraine. Bad UNSC-5. Bad!

Saudi Arabia is probably the country least trustworthy with nuclear weapons.

Now we get to see how much the west actually cares about nuclear weapons and the safety of the middle-east. I'd bet that they wouldn't give a shit if Saudi-Arabia got a nuke and i doubt they're going to sanction the country to hell like they did with Iran, becouse you know, Saudi's are class A ass kissers.

Since when is Iran trying to build a nuclear weapon? Seems like you know more then pretty much all intelligence services combined.

I'm sure the Iranians will be chuffed with having Sunni nuclear powers to their east and their south-west.

What could possibly go wrong?

Also, the Americans pretty much have to condemn/forestall this, as far as I can tell, because otherwise their policy on Iran starts to look very obviously hypocritical and indefensible very quickly.

I assume I'm not the only one that thinks that a country that still crucifies people shouldn't have a nuclear weapon?
