You're really comparing apples to oranges, here. For the LGB community, the eqiivalent of "nigger" is "faggot". For the trans community, its "tranny". "Queer" is more comparable to the word "color(ed)". I.E., until recently, had fallen out of disuse due to unfortunate connotations, but has been reclaimed to the point that people can, and often do, use it in a clearly non-derogatory manner, even people ouside the community being described.

I'm a gay man, and I honestly never call lesbians dykes. Nor would I call men faggots. There is no double standard when you see it in a different light.

I occasionally call some of my lesbian friends dykes; some of them have asked me not to, so I don't use it for them, while others don't mind at all.

I'm not sure whether people in the BDSM community truly do count, though. I mean, on the one hand, yes they are a sexual minority, and they don't do anything wrong (at least not those doing it right), but I think the oppressions they face are decidedly different from those faced by LGBTQ+ people. Discrimination against us (referring to LGBTQ+ folk) arises from the fact that we challenge the gender binary by our very existence. Discrimination against them (though I guess I'm kind of kinky too...) arises from the fact that vanilla people find their sex practices weird/rapey/creepy.

I mean, they're good allies, and hell, there's often a lot of overlap between members of the LGBT+ community and the BDSM community, but I honestly can't see any way they're being institutionally discriminated against. Socially, sure, and I will and have stood up in its defense, but legally, institutionally? No.

I feel I should note that I do think that mental illness definitely needs to be brought into the spotlight and given more visibility. The shame surrounding it is a major problem in our society that I have firsthand experience with. So yes, I do think that mental illness needs to be talked about in mainstream discussion and widely accepted. The thing that really ticked me off was that he was saying that being transgender is a mental illness and citing chromosomes as proof that trans people are delusional.

Personally, I probably wouldn't have handled it as well as Zoey did. Considering how persistent he was, I probably would've punched his lights out sooner or later.

Oh, yeah, I've been in that boat. Once when I was 14, I had a huge crush on this homophobic guy (while I was living in Qatar, where homosex with penises is illegal), and one day (both to bug him and because he was really fucking cute) I whispered, "You've been a bad boy," in his ear while sliding my hand down his back towards his ass.

... Yeah, probably not the smartest thing, and I was scared shitless when he threatened to tell our Head of Year (the vice-principal of sorts presiding over our age group), since she was the kind of lady who would actually report me to the authorities and get me thrown in jail, but I later apologised and we never really spoke again outside of what was necessary.

That experience taught me an important lesson about containing my pervertedness.
