Depends if it's nervous/crying in despair laughing or not.

IIRC though they were only mandated to disarm rather than dissolve completely.

Some years ago - perhaps c.1990-1992 - I found myself in a shop in Annapolis, the state capital of Maryland.

On hearing my accent, the shopkeeper proceeded to treat me to hectoring lecture on how his grandfather was from Ireland, that he'd been to Ulster once, the British had no role in Ireland, and the only solution was to send them all 'home'. All the Protestants - whether Presbyterian or Church of Ireland - had to go back to Scotland or England respectively.

I refrained from pointing out that Annapolis had only been founded in 1649, and that this meant his home city was younger than the Ulster Plantations, or that the Protestants of Northern Ireland had been living there considerably longer than his family had been living in the United States.

After all, I wanted to leave the shop with both my bones and my dignity intact.

To the best of my knowledge, you can accuse the PIRA of more or less anything as the organisation is not a member of these forums, and you wouldn't be accusing them of trolling on the basis of their activity here in NSG.

Oh good.

BTW, are you sure they're not a member of these forums? We didn't think they were a member of reality any more.

Some members are suspected of murdering a former member about a month ago. Though what I read from it back then, it said the PSNI didn't think it was sanctioned by the leadership. Don't know if that's changed or not.

I'm pretty sure Corbyn is just considering women's only carriage

Of course, this has the potential to be very bad for transgender women.

This could put prices up for men though, since I bet it'd be 'sexest' if women couldn't go in mens carriages.

Pretty much bang on. We should look to education and socialization if we're going to have any meaningful effect on gender based violence.

Val Halla wrote:I'm pretty sure Corbyn is just considering women's only carriage

Of course, this has the potential to be very bad for transgender women.

He's not even really considering it.

Corbyn literally said “Some women have raised with me that a solution to the rise in assault and harassment on public transport could be to introduce women-only carriages. My intention would be to make public transport safer for everyone from the train platform to the bus stop to the mode of transport itself,” he says.

“However, I would consult with women and open it up to hear their views on whether women-only carriages would be welcome – and also if piloting this at times and on modes of transport where harassment is reported most frequently would be of interest.” (From the Guardian)

Not once has he actually put this forward as some kind of idea he has committed to. Nowhere does it fucking say this but they are all leaping on it as though Corbyn has announced that all women must now be accompanied by men when outside.

Its actually embarrassing how they are deliberately misinterpreting what he said because its the only thing they think they can attack him on.

I think it's pretty disgusting that he's even thinking about a consultation on this. Why would he open it up to women and not to men?

Because its about trying to tackle sexual assaults and the like against women on public transport by men.

Well the media always behave like a pack of wolves and Corbyn is literally always going to have this problem so he might as well get used to tackling it early on. However this time I side mainly with the detractors, the idea it's self is terrible it shouldn't have even been mentioned. Much less by some one who represents the left just because "Some Women" told him.

It may be a sop to the right winged working class folks who eat Ideas like this up and I can respect the maneuvering behind that but it really is a horrible idea in practice.

By which token, hopefully the next generation will grow up better than the current one. But that doesn't do anything about this week.

It's a fake scandal. He's not saying women MUST go into a carriage, against their will. (Hell, it's not even HIS idea that he's discussing).

Creating a voluntarily separate area where women CAN go if they want can't really be a bad thing.

Society does not need any more gender segregation voluntary or otherwise. Also the idea is kind of inherently trans-phobic.

I'm not saying society needs gender segregation although, to be honest, I'm increasingly becoming unsure about that.

People are allowed to freely associate or segregate, and that's not a bad thing. And if it takes voluntarily segregated spaces to make people feel safe, then that's not a monstrous idea.

Also, no. It's not transphobic. Inherently, or otherwise.
