Feminists, get over yourselves.

Postby New Albian » Mon May 04, 2015 5:27 pm

I don't mean economic equality, as that is demonstrably false but rather equality between races and Gender. We all know the wage gap is based on misleading statistics that virtually falls apart when you look at occupations. Let's face it, no one cares if your gay or not and those that do are not really in charge of your life. Business leaders have tended to be rather socially liberal. The feminist movement is a fluke, and affirmative action (imho, i know this is very controversial but this is genuinely my viewpoint) is essentially racism in and of itself. In this day and age, I honestly don't understand the feminist movements or the hundreds of thousands of gender movements or whatever new thing we're fighting today. We should simply drive for general egalitarianism, and that is all. Instead of marching for specific sub groups, why don't we just march as people in general?

I have grown up in a stable environment of racial, ethnic, gender, and sexuality blindness and this is my viewpoint.

Others may say that we still haven't done enough, or we should tip the odds more in minority favors.

(also I'm Hispanic, so don't try spewing "white privilege")

I'd like to genuinely discuss this, as I know many are sensitive and passionate about this stuff.

Social equality does exist when it comes to morally neutral traits.

Because there are specific problems that impact women in harmful ways and it makes a lot of sense to try to address those problems. Thus feminism.

What I don't get is that these girls, especially at my school, wear all these tight clothing and shorts and shirts that show off their skin and stuff. It's like they wake up in the morning and showy "Gee, what clothes show the most skin?" And then when people look at them, they get all offended and be light guys are pervs. WTF. They are all like "gender equality while I make myself look Like a hoe!" Like seriously, if you want me to treat you with more respect than the bunch I naturally give to everyone, don't make yourself look like you just came off of the corner of Imas street and Lut avanue (put those two road names together ;)) just actually look presentable, and guys might actually respect you more, well the good ones.

It's not that the wage gap is nonexistent. It's that it's less pronounced than the 77 cents per dollar figure we hear frequently from commentators/pundits. When you take into consideration "controllable variables" like job position, the number of hours worked, number of children, type of educational credentials like college degree, and how often unpaid leave is taken, it reduces to between 4.8% and 7.1% as opposed to the frequently-cited 23% figure, according to the US Dept. of Labor.

The reality is that this type of thing is a lot more nuanced and a lot more difficult to calculate than most people would like. It's much easier for people to quote little factoids that are easy to fathom.

Exercising a little Modly privilege here and merging the "Feminists, get over yourselves" thread with this older one on the same subject.

I might also add that that "Feminists, get over yourselves" title was more than a little baity by itself. Be careful of things like that, Havenburgh.

Just encase you missed it the thread still has that title.

Okay but...

Postby Demonic Pikachu » Tue May 05, 2015 12:50 pm

I don't know, man. Like, equality sounds nice. You know, the whole seeing people as people and not as their gender or sexuality or race or whatever. And there are some things that women don't have/get that men do. I don't really think it's that big of a deal but I'm not going to complain if they somehow get somewhere with this "equality" thing. Most feminists are really over the top though and are more female>male instead of female=male, you know? But I honestly think girls are just trying to make it so they don't feel less important than the opposite gender. I'm a girl myself, actually, though I really don't care enough to be a feminist. I do, however, understand their point of view.
Sorry if this was a waste of your time. cx

The idea of women's rights and gender equality is a noble idea that I support staunchly. Feminism, back in it's earlier incarnations, was crucial in bringing rights to women not only in the US, but in Europe. Now, thanks to the internet, feminism is viewed as a belief that overlaps with the tumblr idiots who scream "cis privilege." Furthermore, there have been some really far fetched laws and quotas in the developed world. Feminism is ultimately good, but not necessarily in the incarnation that it exists in today.

One of the main problems I have with modern feminism is the widespread trans exclusion. Another thing is ignorance of class as a factor in oppression, which comes from my socialism. More female CEOs isn't as good as it sounds.

What means "most feminists are really over the top"?
Don't you think there are lot of issues that still affect women in our society?
And if so, and we all know is so, how can you write "I really don't care enough to be a feminist"?

Basically, that.

The problem is the feminist approach is flawed and contrary to the common justifications . It is not new, it is not a corruption, it is not a few bad apples spoiling the bunch. Feminism has always held as it's primary goal the advancement of women and the idea that it's the one true movement for gender equality is inconsistent with that.
