If you start a conference on a subject bound to piss off over one billion people, don't be surprised some of them are going to react violently.

Especially ones that have a history of reacting violently to the slightest provocation. I'm not really surprised that it happened, but thank God only one person got hurt.

Crimes committed by Muslims will be a pan-Islamic plot and proof of Islam's inherent evil. On the other hand crimes committed by non-Muslims will merely be the acts of loners who do not represent their belief system at all.
The probability of one's participation in homosexual acts is directly proportional to one's public disdain and disgust for homosexuals.
If a political figure makes an accusation of wrongdoing without evidence, odds are probable that the accuser or an associate thereof has in fact committed the very same act, possibly to a worse degree.

Indeed.

Compare to, say, Indonesia, who allows imams and habibs to preach hatred against the ahli-kitab and ahmadiyya in the mosque's mimbars and people to thoughtlessly engaging in holocaust-denial, while jailing an atheist for his blasphemy against the Prophet pbuh.

I repeat (this is Azurand btw), as the part of the Faith for a long time, I know that most Muslims are nice, normal people. It's just that... a lot of them really need to stop engaging in ridiculous persecution complex.

Then the other religions need to stop engaging too.

It's the consequences of discussing religion.

A consequence that does not always occur thus rendering it a potential consequence.

Given the group in question, being more right-wing than them would be extremely difficult, but it gets to a point where both groups are peddling such utterly repellent views that in general there's no meaningful difference between them, with the caveat that in this instance the people shooting are in the wrong because they're shooting.

The contest was textbook baiting though. Deliberately rub in a sensitive religious topic in hopes that easily offended radicals looking for an excuse to be violent take the bait, then when easily offended radicals act violently in response to the bait hold them up as gold standard examples of Muslims everywhere.

It's the consequences of discussing religion.

I've had plenty of conversations with people about religion, and many of which did not devolve into anyone being an asshole to anyone else.

The right to express provocative views is an important thing to protect in a free society.

And thankfully the US is one of the few countries without authoritarian hate speech laws.

Maybe, but that is irrelevant here. The poster you attacked with a sarcastic remark was in fact making a point about such conferences inciting unrest by provoking people who have a religious obligation to defend their faith against mockery (which is a fact), and who are therefore far more likely to become violent over such incidents, and indeed have, than members of other faiths who have no such obligations (which is also a fact).

Hence I fail to see the relevance of your initial comment attacking that post.
