I have it, and by and large, its starting to be seen as just a different brain wiring than a disorder.

I think it must be rather insulting for autistic people to say that autism is somehow worse than polio, rubella, measles, etc. One wonders what they'd be saying if smallpox was still around.

It most certainly is insulting. The vast majority of "Autistic" people are high functioning. Their brains may be wired slightly differently, but it is in no real way a hinderance to their lives or professions, and in many cases gives them an edge.

I wouldn't say its an edge, because we often have trade offs in that we are bad socially, or something of that nature.

But its ok, you can all free ride on my part of herd immunity.

Should have been more specific, sorry.....should have said in many cases in certain professions it gives them an edge.... especially in certain of the engineering and technical fields where attention to detail is a must, and interpersonal interaction is low.

In other news, scientests at Harvard discorvered today that standing in snow is cold. Seriously, I'm surprised we need to waste time doing this, especially when 90% of people who still believe vaccines cause autism still will believe it if Albert Einstein told tem it wasn't true. About 1.5 million children under the age of 5 die each year of perventable diseases. I know a lot of these don't have to do with not getting vaccines, but really. If you seriously believe that getting autism (which you won't), which does not majorly limit you at all at living a good life, is worse than dying because you didn't get vaccinated because you still believe in some debunked myth, that is sad.

Well, that's true. But, most of us live more or less normally. Which is far better than ending up dying if disease, no matter how much parents may dislike Autism.

Hardly a victory. It should be clear to most rational people that there is zero link between vaccines and autism. Medical professionals have agreed with this statement even since the inception of vaccines. With that being said, few will be convinced by this study, as fans of Jenny McCarthy and sheltered suburban parents would rather live in their incorrect echo chambers. So, to call this a victory is an overstatement, since I imagine that nothing major, or anything at all noteworthy will happen as a result of this study.

It doesn't matter how many studies they make. People will just claim "that's what they want you to think!" and ignore them. They'll say it's all a conspiracy designed by the Establishment to corrupt minds and keep you shackled or something.

Consider, for example, these examples:

Sophie Brassard, a woman whose sons were infected with AIDS had refused to allow her children access to medical care when they became ill. She even fled the country with them. She consequently lost custody and parental rights.

She later lost her life to the disease.

As did Christine Maggiore and her daughter:

"The HIV-positive mother of two laid out matter-of-factly why, even while pregnant, she hadn't taken HIV medications, and why she had never tested her children for the virus... Seven weeks later, Eliza Jane was dead."

Ever hear of Continuum? It was a long-running AIDS denialist newsletter from the UK that folded when all the editors died, ironically from AIDS. Huw Christie, one of the editors, had developed Kaposi's Sarcoma and later died from AIDS complications. When news spread of his death, what was the reaction in the denalist community?

"Did you know Hugh* Christie? Also a gay friend of mine from London, filmmaker and editor of the very popular British gay-interested journal, Continuum. Christie campaigned actively against the health and AIDS hazards of poppers in Continuum. Like me, he was invited by Mbeki, to discuss the causes of AIDS in Africa in 2000. And a year or two later he passed away with Kaposi's, from long-term over-use/addiction to poppers!"

Finally, just go to any Youtube video about AIDS and get hit by all the denialism in the comments which range from AIDS is a White plot to kill blacks to there has never been any scientific papers proving HIV = AIDS, etc.

So while we would consider this topic something to get a chuckle out of by, say, writing a post like "they also discovered that water is, indeed, wet," the people who could really use this study the most won't, and consequently their children may reap the fruits of their apathy just like the children of Brassard and Maggiore.

I for one think we shouldn't have required vaccines. no, wait, keep reading. it gets better.
I also think that when someone files for exemption, they should be picked up by the secret police and deported to the most hellish, unsanitary part of Africa we can find, for 6 months. then, if they didn't die of measles or AIDS, and didn't get decapitated by Boko Haram, they can return to our nice, clean country, and better yet, they know again what measles death looks like.
