I think it must be rather insulting for autistic people to say that autism is somehow worse than polio, rubella, measles, etc. One wonders what they'd be saying if smallpox was still around.
It most certainly is insulting. The vast majority of "Autistic" people are high functioning. Their brains may be wired slightly differently, but it is in no real way a hinderance to their lives or professions, and in many cases gives them an edge.
