Well, obviously not JUST because of his race.
But it would be ridiculous to pretend it wasn't a major factor. Remember, the GOP ran a candidate that actually WAS born outside of the US against Obama, but made a big deal about whether Obama was a real citizen, claiming he was secretly African.
So, no - not JUST because of his race.
John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone, which at the time, was US territory.
No. It was a "leasehold" (like Rammstein AFB in Germany for example), except that it was a "perpetual lease" which the US could renew over and over again as long as we wanted to (Guantanamo is also a perpetual leasehold: every year we formally tender rent money to Cuba, and every year they formally refuse to take it, since the Castro brothers do not accept that the US ever had the right to impose this deal on Cuba). Most particularly, it was Panamanian sovereign territory in the specific sense that children born there to Panamanian parents were Panamanian citizens, not US citizens.

Trump did a lot to promote it, but it was invented by a deranged lawyer named Berg who has sued the government over various alleged conspiracies, and was big into "trutherism" before he started birtherism. He supported Hillary in 2008, to Hillary's continuing embarrassment.

No, that would not be at all safe.
