Hebrew wasn't anybody's mother tongue. In Israel, they spoke Aramaic, Pharisees and Priests had to go to school to learn Hebrew. Compare Shakespeare, Chaucer with modern English, that is close to the difference between Hebrew and Aramaic.

Yeah, no the Pharisees probably had Hebrew as their mother tounge seeing as how the portion of the Talmud they penned was in Hebrew.

Historically the tongue died out of the mass language use sometime between 200-400 CE. Of-course whether or not individuals, or small groups of Jews spoke Hebrew after words especially after the fall of the Roman empire in the west is unknown.

Kingdom of Sicily he was taught Latin, probably by his uncle who was an Abbot of a Benedictine Monastery or to one of the colleges he was enrolled in.

Italian is as different from Latin as modern English from Anglo-Saxon (3 times the difference of Aramaic from Hebrew)

I've always admired monastic traditions even as a Protestant. We need more monks in Christendom today in the face of modernity.
