What should Sarky be when he grows up?

Postby Sarkhaan » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:38 pm

Alright...I'll attempt to make this thread two-fold: advice, and discussion.

I'm moving to California in 8 months. This is wonderful. The problem is this: I do not have my education certification in California, and therefore will likely be yet another year (or two...or three) behind in my chosen profession. So my next best bet? Getting my masters!

The options:
Reading specialist: this is a subdivision of special education. It would give me a huge edge in finding education jobs, but is the absolute last thing I want to study. Good career, bad satisfaction.
American literature: this would provide me with a stronger backing in English (my current focus) and could allow me to teach in some colleges. It definitely interests me, and would help with my career, but keeps me going in one track...is that a good thing?
Biology: I'm not sure exactly what type of biology, but I've always loved it, and would like to have new angles from which to view the world. Science teacher positions are more in demand, and has the benefit of private sector demand.
Law: I like studying law...I just don't know if I'd like cleaning up other peoples' messes.

So...what should I do?

And, to provide further discussion, do you have a masters? If yes, in what? Is it related to your bachelors/job? Why did you get it? If you are too young for masters, apply these questions to your bachelors/focus of study

Aaaaaaaaaaaand....go.

Unless all the great American books get burnt, yes (if they do all get burnt, then perhaps even more so).

I considered history because I like it and am really pretty good at it...but it sort of keeps me in the category of "screwed"...history and English are both not particularly in demand...at least not around here and not in the current job market. Fuckers.

Teachers regardless of type were in demand here heavily....like the rest of the job market, it is kind of stagnating....

It's a shame there isn't a career field for Literary Legal Biology.

The English teacher in me elects to use "I would prefer not to" (yes, I am a nerd. I know). But yeah, moving out to Cali is sort of one way of not growing up. Particularly if my last week is any indication of what I am in for in the coming year(s).

My MA is in Counseling & Educational Psychology with emphasis in Information Technologies in Education. Which pretty much means I use computers when I teach sometimes.

Any of these have the potential to lead to both socially worthwhile and financially profitable careers. My gut feeling is that their will be more job opportunities available if you go with law or biology, but my advice would be to do a lot of research and make up your own mind. Right now I'm agonizing over similar choices, and can't even make up my mind about my own life, and I'm certainly in no position to advise anyone else on such a subject, nor would I presume to do so.

We now practically read it "all men are created equal, except negroes" When the Know-Nothings get control, it will read "all men are created equal, except negroes, and foreigners, and Catholics." When it comes to this I should prefer emigrating to some country where they make no pretence of loving liberty -- to Russia, for instance, where despotism can be taken pure, and without the base alloy of hypocracy." - President Abraham Lincoln.

I vote AmLit, too. It will support your career. It will likely open up more intellectual/academic paths than you expect.

Law would be a second choice, but mostly for intellectual training. However, you don't plan to practice law, do you? Going for a law degree is very expensive and very time consuming, so if you're not planning to become an attorney, I'm not sure it would be worth the investment.

Most of the non-biologists I know who got a degree in biology, got it in micro-biology, which they told me is actually mostly statistics and is quite dull.

I do not have a masters and if I did have one it would not be related to my career. I do not believe that arts degrees are actually good for artists or art. I would (and may yet someday in my old age) go for something in literature or history.

It's something that I've toyed with, actually. Many small schools need teachers for partial jobs (.4 English, .6 bio, etc). I've always loved doing interdisciplinary units, and studying bio or law couldn't hurt that...the only problem with law is that it is damned expensive to study and become a teacher.

Just get on an established reality show, or make a sex tape and then get your own reality show. I always assumed that was how everyone made a living in California.

But seriously, I majored in Art History, so parent's basement, here I come. Do the reading thing and get a career.

Economics? Seems to me there are few good teachers in that.
“Every age and generation must be as free to act for itself in all cases as the age and generations which preceded it. The vanity and presumption of governing beyond the grave is the most ridiculous and insolent of all tyrannies. Out of those it sounds like American lit would suit you the best. Of course, it depends on what you're looking for from a job, economic success or job satisfaction because rarely do they occur at the same time.

I really wouldn't worry about being "behind" in your career, I'm 27 and just now finishing my Bachelors because I spent several years in the US military. I realized a while ago that I'm not trying to stay "with" anyone and that I've still got a lot of years ahead of me to be a working stiff.

I intend on pursuing a Masters (possibly a Doctorate, we'll see) although I'm not 100% sure what in. My Bachelors will be a BA in French and my tentative plan is to get my Masters in French but I'm also studying Breton on the side and really enjoying it. This fall I'm moving to Brittany to teach English for a while (hopefully a couple of years) so I'm going to see if I can get in on some Breton classes and perhaps pursue that as an area of study.

Reading specialist. Screw how good the job is, if you don't enjoy it fuck it. So no to the first.

American Lit. maybe. Here is the thing, Focusing is good, but you sound like you are not certain that's what you want to focus on.

Biology. I think this is the one for you. You want to broaden your skill set more than focus on one set path.

Law, It seems like you want to teach. If you want to teach be a teacher, not a lawyer.
