I don't really care about the SEC. My main concern is the ACC and my once glorious 'Noles. Oh well, our time shall come again some day.

For those who understand no explanation is necessary
For those who haven't a clue no explanation is possibly

There is far more sport, science, talent, endurance, reflex, Americana, fanily values, raw power, machisimo, sex, intrigue, drama, and history that the unknowing never perceive.

Since 1948 NASCAR Rocks

But then again I'm a Jeff Gordon, Hendricks Motor Sports, Jimmy Johnson, Bow Tie kinda guy.

Better Southern Miss than Ole Miss, I guess.

It breaks down something like this, for all those not from the American South.

If you're from Virginia, you're the border guards. You're far north of the Deep South, yet you've got a lot of history behind you to help make you the cream of the crop. As a wise man once quipped, you're one of the towers of conceit in Southern terms (along with South Carolina) straddling a valley of humility (North Carolina). You're uppity on Virginia Tech football and actually think Virginia has a fighting chance in the ACC come March.

If you're from North Carolina, you're labeled as "New South" despite really being "Mix of the South" - you've got heritage and progress with you. You'll spend your time with NASCAR, ACC Basketball (Wake/NC State/Duke/UNC), arguing about the merits of having a Cajun boy as the Panthers starting Quarterback, and whether the tailgating at Hurricanes games qualifies it as being "Southern" enough.

South Carolina is kind of a blend of Conservative Florida with Coastal Georgia, if that makes any sense. You're a horrible driver, and you think that the Confederate Battle Flag being on capital grounds is a symbol of pride. You spend your times separating Clemson and South Carolina fans from one another, and making fun of the Citadel.

Georgia is a nice little slice of Heaven. A few diehard enthusiasts actually remember that a pretty famous baseball team still plays in Atlanta. Otherwise, God Help You if you wear yellow in Athens, or red down near Techwood Drive. Oh, and they race in Hampton a few times a year, though we're kind of forgetting about that, too.

Florida is Florida; God love 'em, we don't like to claim them as our own, but damned if we don't enjoy slipping down to Panama City or Fort Myers or Key West in the spring time. Florida is straight up Football, like a lot of Deep South States. You're either for the heritage (Florida State), the moment (Florida), or a football team with more criminals than Congress (Miami). Oh, and South Florida piques a bit of interest when they come around once every twenty five years.

Alabama is for football, football, football. Talladega is fine, but Auburn/Alabama is pretty much Christmas before Christmas. Tuscaloosa is a nice place to be around when the Tide Rolls, though poor Tommy kind of destroyed Auburn's offense before he got the boot.

Mississippi is another one of those Football hotbeds, though Heaven knows why - you get whipped by Vandy for goodness sakes! Where's your self respect at? Racing is an acquired taste here.

Tennessee is a nice little slice of Heaven. It's the Virginia to Kentucky's West Virginia, if that makes sense. The further east in the state you go, Vols Football and NASCAR become the talk of the town. If you move towards the center of the state, you're looking more at Pro Football and Vanderbilt basketball. The west end of the state is straight up Memphis Basketball, since the Grizzlies are so horrible.

Arkansas gets a pass for being southern only because the Razorbacks tempt the "experts" every year with "They'll break out in the SEC West in 20_ _!" Otherwise, you're getting out into the sticks.

Louisiana, God bless 'em, the little engine that could. You guys just keep chugging down in NOLA, getting behind the Saints and the Hornets when Chris Paul lights it up. It's never fun to watch 'Bama take the National Title, especially with Saban at the helm. But at least it wasn't Auburn. Lou'ze'anna is football territory.

(If you're keeping track, you'll notice that football is pretty big in the South).

Texas gets the "Southern" moniker from me, simply because they serve barbecue like its going out of style. Texas is probably the biggest High School football state in the South, though South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana give 'em a run for their money on occasion. Disrespecting the Longhorns or the Cowboys is like taking a dump on the Alamo and lighting farts while aimed at a picture of Sam Houston. You just don't DO IT.

Any questions?

NASCAR quit being southern when they became the Nextel Cup. They're the friend that you welcome into your life for years and years, yet they turn into moochers who use money you give them to help them out to make midnight beer runs with the guys next door while not paying rent.

Miami joining the ACC kind of killed Florida State if you ask me. Yeah, Florida got lucky with Tebow and Co. but Bobby Bowden's had troubles ever since B.C. and Miami entered the conference. It wasn't but seven or eight years ago that Chris Weinke was taking you to the National Championship. Now, you're lucky if you have a quarterback who throws as good as Pro QB Weinke, which would make Stephen King wet his bed in terror at night.

But seriously, I'm not big on NASCAR. Never really have been, probably never will be. I do like Formula 1, on the other hand.

It's cars going left for a few hours. Sure, it involves driving skill, but...I can see that sort of traffic and cut throat behaviour by driving I-35 from here to Austin.

My apologies, I should have researched it.
However, compared to the US, it has a negligible fan base, and within my particular region and pretentious friend network, Nascar conjures images of a trailer park, Marlboros and Ted Neugent. That's obviously an exaggeration, but it certainly is associated with the deep south, and 4 hours is still dreadfully long to watch cars drive in circles.

Regardless, subjective as hell, we all enjoy our fair share of weird shit.
