I'm tired of the FCC censoring Television. I believe the govt can't tell me what is good for me to watch or not watch. If parents don't like programs don't let your kids watch be a parent(Lazy adults).

So what do ya'll think.

Fuck the FCC, without the FCC we'd have more George Carlins! Once a great philosopher and political commentator of our time!

I don't think so. Allowing people to say whatever the fuck they want on prime-time TV wouldn't necessarily produce a sudden burst of creative genius. George Carlin was great because he was great, and he worked in a number of lines outside the control of the FCC.

I think excessive swearing, including use of more exotic swears, should be considered more like...a commodity. That is to say, the more extreme cases of language, violence and sex ought not to be broadcast freely over the air-waves. You should have to buy a cable package to include channels that have that kind of content. And from what I understand, that's kind of how things are now so...yeah.

I gotta say though, when you let twelve-year-olds run rampant with lingual autonomy, you get horrible dialogue, like the second half of District 9. It's kind of like having a 1/4" thick cake with 3" of icing on it. It just makes you sick.

I'm unfamiliar with the criteria of the FCC, of course.
As for the tv censorship per se, I think that the "safe hours" criteria (or whatever they're called: anyway the rules that allow certain contents only at night) are a relic of the past, when there was just a small number of tv channels.
Nowadays, with the DVBs, it is easier to make specific channels for specific contents, with encryption/parental monitoring systems, that would allow parents to show the kids what they think it's OK to show them.

Generally speaking, though, I think that some contents (expecially explicit pornography and violence, but also compulsive consumerism, excessive focus on status symbols, when not downright stupidity elevated to criterion for personal success) are unsuited for kids, because fiction gives them highly unrealistic models as if they were the real thing (TM), and through an emotion-based medium instead than through a logic-based medium. That's not an ideal thing to happen to a personality still in its developing phase.

The FCC was first made to prevent channels and radio stations from using the same frequencies. Now it's little more than the US department of censorship.

yes.

because i dont like it, i support that it is restricted. im not creating restrictions that dont already exist. i appreciate that there are some outlets that are forced to obey some rules of decency.

A lot of the time, when people try to be edgy and add in swearing it comes off as pointless obscenity (see Deadwood), and a lot of the time when nudity is added shows just seem more gratuitous and tacky (see The Plan compared to BSG the series). If people can use supposedly adult elements in a vaguely classy way it can add to a show, but when the writers don't know how to swear convincingly or add any level of nudity while still maintaining the decorum of the show then it just makes everything a bit worse.
End the Modigarchy now.

They should separate the two functions. With FCC going back to its original purpose, and a mixed governmental/academic/professional panel to check the contents and rate them.

i never found the word fuck to be offensive. its just a word composed from a few letters.

however, nudity/hardcore violence shouldn't be on TV during peak time.

And you get to define decency. How nice, Empress. Mind if I grovel as well, perhaps get the FCC to start censoring NSG to your tastes as well?

Uh huh. So if there's something that you don't like, you don't mind if it's banned from all but a few places? That's a very strange sentiment to be expressing on this particular day.

I don't mind ratings, it's the outright restriction/banning that I mind. Although splitting it into two does sound like a good idea.

yeah i support that there should be some media outlets that are forced to offer programming without "FUCK", without tits, without excessive sexual and violent content.

just as i support that there should be some media outlets where those rules do not apply.

I think that broadcast T.V. rules are okay. I don't want hard core porn shown during prime time in between the news and the late show.

I think that cable should be unrestricted.
