They become a family member. That may say more about our ability to emotionally invest in other animals than what they give in return, although I do think dogs are capable of a certain level of emotional comprehension.

I think there have been studies pointing towards dogs being able to differentiate between different himan emotions and acting differently. I don't remember where I saw it, but I do remember something like that. Makes sense to me, my dog always pesters me when I don't spend time with my family.

There have been a few different studies on it. They can pick up on emotional cues, facial expressions, tone of voice, etc. It's very interesting, but as we've selectively bread dogs to be our companions, perhaps not too surprising.

That'd be a good idea for a novel, talking about how humans bring dogs and cants and such into space with them, relating both of their evolutionary connections. Also, bread dogs? :p

Selective breeding is very interesting. I remember once hearing the argument that domestication is actually an evolutionary strategy of the animal, that takes advantage of our own instinct to nurture our young. Could be an evolutionary misfire on our part, and the animals took advantage of our nurturing instinct.

I meant breed. Stupid english homophones. You let me down this time, phonetic spelling.
