Also, apparently Berliner also means jelly doughnut in German. My friend told me this; so I could just be gullible.

It does in some parts of Germany. Bavaria, from memory, but that might well be wrong.

I was born in the UK (Chelsea, London, to be exact) but when I was young my parents divorced and we moved to the US. Happy?

Right, this human furnace I have for a partner is taking the piss. Bedroom window wide open in March.

Compulsory Consumerist State

Postby Barboneia » Wed Mar 11, 2015 4:58 pm

Apparently my grandparents, or my father's parents to be specific, had my father's remains cremated shortly after his death. Now, I am feeling two different ways on this. One side of me is very pissed off that they never bothered to tell me this, and my father died around 4 years ago. I mean, yes, I was around 9 at the time so I likely wouldn't be able to handle it, but still. Another side of me is very happy that they did this for him. It will be comforting to know he'll always be close, I guess. Or at least, as close as his ashes can get. Since I'm going to their house this weekend, I think they're going to show me the urn then. And I'm probably going to have a large emotional breakdown. But I'll be happy knowing I'll be surrounded by my family, and we'll all be able to share the grief.

In fairness, I don't think anybody would explain the specifics of how a person's remains were handled to a nine year old, especially cremation. Had you thought he was buried somewhere?

The West won the world not by the superiority of its ideas or values or religion … but rather by its superiority in applying organized violence. Westerners often forget this fact; non-Westerners never do.

I don't even remember now. I knew the concepts of cremation and burying. They never told me anything, so I really don't know. The thing is, I wasn't even told how he died. I don't want to live the rest of my life knowing my father died without even finding out how. Even if it was something embarrassing like genital mutilation I'd still want to know.

Love may also be involved, but I'm probably just being uncharacteristically romantic there. Maybe you should just spoon with him and steal his precious body warmth.
