Nimoy, when I used to watch Star Trek reruns on G4 (before it was rebranded as Esquire), was always a treat to see on-screen. His calm personality and contrast with Kelley's character Bones never ceased to entertain me. I actually grew interested in science as a result of Star Trek and can attribute part of my journey toward being a lapsed Catholic and eventually an atheist to him. Before Spock and Star Trek, I was a pretty intolerant, hardcore Catholic. After I grew interested in both Star Trek and sci-fi as a wider genre, I slowly moved away from my faith.

I also adored his voicing of the tech quotes in Civilization IV, one of the few touches that I wish they'd brought him back for in the sequels as well as the CIV expansions. Nothing quite like hearing Spock's deep, somber voice uttering the words: "Beep... Beep... Beep..."

There's already a thread on Nimoy's death.
Gun control is like trying to solve drunk driving by making it harder for sober people to own cars.

It doesn't specifically address his impact on our lives. The main Nimoy thread, which I expressed my condolences on, is for reacting to his death - not remembering his life.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination.

He was part of my first experiences with Western scifi. No pun intended, but he fascinated me. I couldn't understand a word of it without subtitles but his character seemed so resolute and assured, and somehow my brain ascribed Vulcans as somewhat Asian (I was only a kid) in methodology. I decided I'd be a science officer when I grew up.

I'm grown. I'm also a scientist. Though I don't serve aboard a fantasy starship in a utopian, issue-of-the-week setting, I believe I wouldn't have felt the inclination to first explore chemistry and biology had it not been for Roddenberry's brainchild and the life breathed into the role by Nimoy himself.

It's a shame they didn't bring him back for the CIV expansions. His was a unique voice.

Wow. What a shock. He played what's almost certainly one of the most famous and significant roles in science fiction, and was definitely one of the most widely respected actors of his generation. What can I say? I'm a Trekkie, and although I never watched much of the original series, Nimoy was a legend. I just don't have the words. Rest in peace, Mr Spock. There was never a good day for you to die.

Actor, director, poet, and singer... although the last two are perhaps not going to be a major part of how he is remembered.

Edit: Sorry, L Ron, I clarified the title just a tad bit.

83 isn't old at all.

When I opened up Facebook and saw the news I was shocked. I knew he had gone to the hospital, but I had not expected him to die. He lived a great life.

I got to see him Skype chat with a science fiction convention I went to last year, he was so nice to all those that asked questions, read a bit of poetry and even sang a song. Everyone in the room was so happy to see him and he was happy to interact with all of them. It was simply amazing the effect he had.

God damn. My friends were discussing this, and I shrugged it off, since I have many reasons to not believe them. Well, I've never seen Star Trek, but the man was a tireless and talented actor who we'll all miss.
